В остальном Вне обоснованных сомнений подчинялся тайному принципу большинства фильмов Ланга, а именно - непременному противоречию между стремлением к очищению стиля, доведенным в данном случае до крайности, и необыкновенным изобилием сюжетных перипетий, всевозможных неожиданных поворотов с непредсказуемыми последствиями и развитиями.Вне обоснованных сомнений начинается как социальный этюд (на полемичную тему смертной казни) и с молниеносной скоростью, не давая зрителю времени опомниться, перерастает в философски-метафизическую притчу. С помощью серии запутанных и обманчивых поворотов сюжета эта притча выражает глобальную вину всего человечества и стремится со всей наглядностью и безжалостной суровостью показать, что все персонажи принадлежат к проклятой расе, которой для Ланга является вся человеческая порода. Главные герои и статисты представлены здесь в невероятно роскошном окружении нечистых потаенных мыслей, жестов, черточек, которые постепенно внушают зрителю крайнюю тревогу, беспокойство и удивление. Эти чувства отнюдь не исчезают с появлением слова «конец». И все же самый удивительный парадокс фильма в другом: эти персонажи - в особенности, главный герой (Дэйна Эндрюз) - вызывают у своего создателя (Ланга) и глубочайшее презрение, и трагическое сочувствие. Именно при 2-м просмотре Дэйна Эндрюз - напр., когда мы видим его в тюремной камере, подавленного известием о смерти главного редактора газеты, - предстает тем совершенным и обезличенным трагическим героем, образ которого всегда пытался создать на экране Ланг. При 1-м просмотре он - только несправедливо обвиненный; при 2-м на нем висит груз неотвратимой вины, что гораздо тяжелее. В мире, где, как выясняется, невинных людей нет, виновный человек не в силах избежать своего удела и неожиданно предстает жертвой своеобразного трагического и универсального проклятия. По этой причине зритель, осудив его, не может вынести приговора, не признав в этом человеке, хочется того зрителю или нет, брата по крови. Смертная казнь становится метафизическим наказанием, и справедливым, и несправедливым; она в итоге поджидает каждого человека. Финальные повороты сюжета (Гарретт думает, что посмертное письмо Спенсера спасло его от смерти, но теряет шансы по собственной неосторожности и благодаря признаниям и «предательству» невесты) делают приговор еще более мучительным.Все действие фильма разворачивается в намеренно нейтральных декорациях (эта нейтральность по-своему гениальна), которые не только с суровой точностью выражают атмосферу места, но и с небывалой выразительностью подчеркивают любой жест героев. Обратите, напр., внимание на стилизацию скупости и вульгарности Барбары Николз, на сдержанную жестокость Дэна Симора или на полуфригидное поведение Джоан Фонтэйн. Среди присутствующих только Грэм и Чарли, планирующие пожениться, знают всю правду об усопшем.► В фильме действует одно из самых прекрасных воплощений Дьявола, когда-либо созданных в творчестве Хичкока.
