Despite an order to flee to their homes, the military cadets refused to leave, and six who died in the fighting are commemorated as the Niños Héroes. The youngest was aged just 13 and none was older than 20. Despite some doubts which have been raised about the more colourful aspects of the legend (e.g. wrapping themselves in the national flag and leaping to their deaths from the battlements), they remain among the most honoured figures in Mexico's pantheon of national heroes. When US president Harry Truman placed a wreath at their monument on a visit to Mexico in 1947, the gesture went down very well, so much so that President Clinton repeated it in 1997.* * *I adj young; despchildish;¡no seas niño! don’t be childish!II m1 boy;como niño con zapatos nuevos like a child with a new toy3:niños pl children* * *niño, -ña n: child, boy m, girl f* * *niño n3. As well as in Spain itself (where campaigns against it are on the increase, especially among young people), it is popular in many Latin American countries, especially Peru and Mexico, though it has been banned in Uruguay since 1912. The fight begins with the band playing as the mounted officials (“alguacilillos”) ride into the ring, followed by a majestic parade of bullfighters (“toreros”). During this parade (or “paseíllo”), the bullfighters, wearing their colourful costumes (known as “trajes de luces”), lead in their teams of assistants (“subalternos”) and picadors. First the bull is provoked into charging by a series of passes (the “pases de capote”) made with a red and yellow coloured cape. This is followed by the three main stages of the bullfight. In the first, the “tercio de varas”, mounted picadors jab the bull with a spear; in the second, the “tercio de banderillas”, small barbed darts (“banderillas”) are thrust into the bull's back as it charges past the “banderillero”; and finally, the “tercio de muerte” features the bullfighter and his red cape (“muleta”) as he confronts and kills the bull, and (with luck) makes a triumphal exit.* * *m bull;ir a los toros go to a bullfight;tomar al toro por los cuernos take the bull by the horns* * *toro nm: bull* * *toro n bull -

Young writers such as Carlos Fuentes (Mexico, 1929-), Gabriel García Márquez (Colombia, 1928-, Nobel Prize for Literature 1982) and Mario Vargas Llosa (Peru, 1936-) were the most prominent in the Boom, as it came to be known, but some older writers also gained a wider audience — for example, Jorge Luis Borges (Argentina, 1899-1986) and Miguel Ángel Asturias (Guatemala, 1899-1974, Nobel Prize for Literature 1967). Although the Boom is often associated with “magic realism”, a style which mixes reality and fantasy, this in fact originated with earlier writers such as Asturias, Alejo Carpentier (Cuba, 1904-80) and Juan Rulfo (Mexico, 1918-86), and some of the young writers, notably Vargas Llosa, largely shun fantasy in their work.* * *m boom -
14 cañada
(Sp. model spelled same [kaɲáða] < Latin cannam 'cane' and the Spanish derivational suffix - ada 'abundance or content.' Corominas indicates that cañada, meaning receptacle or measurement for water, comes from canna, in the sense of 'a tube through which liquid flows out of the receptacle or instrument for measurement')Bentley: 1836. A valley or dale between mountains. Bentley says that this term is synonymous with arroyo and canyon in the Southwest. Hoy notes that it may also refer to a drainage or tributary forged by a spring; alternately, it may have as its referent a water- and soil-filled basin of arable land. This term is not common in English, where, according to Bentley, it is used more in writing than in speaking. The definitions found in English sources correspond to those found in Spanish sources. The DRAE defines cañada as a narrow piece of land between two higher points. Islas adds that the higher points are generally hills or hillocks. Santamaría indicates that in Mexico it refers to a cornfield just after a harvest, and in Cuba it is a small arroyo or waterway that is dry during part of the year. According to Cobos, in New Mexico and southern Colorado, a cañada may be "a dry riverbed or a small canyon in the sierra." -
