Aujourd'hui cette phrase est souvent utilisée, notamment dans la presse, pour parler d'une situation où règne la corruption, dans le monde politique ou bien dans une organisation par exemple. Le terme the state of Denmark est alors remplacé par le terme approprié comme dans l'exemple suivant: the recent revelations have shown that there is something rotten at the heart of the British civil service ("les dernières révélations prouvent qu'il y a quelque chose de pourri au coeur de l'administration britannique"). -
