72 ἀγρός
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `field'Compounds: ἄγροικος `who lives in the country' ( ἀγρο-Ϝοικ-); in modern Greek this gave an oppositum γροικός = νοήμων; from this again γροικῶ `understand' (Hatzidakis, Glotta 14, 208f.). ἄγρωστις \< *h₂eǵro-h₁d-tis, cf. νῆστις; Meier-Brügger, KZ 103 (1990) 33f.Derivatives: ἄγριος `agrestis, wild'. ἀγροιώτης (Il.) for ἀγρώτης will have arisen at verse end, Risch 32. On ἀγρέτης s. ἄγρα. ἀγρότερος `wild' from `from the field(s)' in opposition to cultivated places. ἄγρυπνος `who sleeps outside' developed into `sleepless, awake' (cf. ἄγρ-αυλος `who has his bed\/lair in the field')Origin: IE [Indo-European] [6] *h₂eǵrosEtymology: Old IE word, originally the uncultivated field: Skt. ájra-, Lat. ager, Germ., Goth. akrs, Arm. art. 74 ἄθρας
Grammatical information: m.\/f.?Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Generally compared with Skt. vandhúra- m. `wagon-seat' taken as wicker basket tied upon the wagon, and connected with NHG winden etc. (Pok. 1148) as IE u̯endʰ-: u̯n̥dʰ- (\> gr. [F] αθ-). Lidén Streitberg-Festgabe 227. But the formation of the Sanskrit word is unclear (KEWA 3, 143), and the root is hardly attested outside Germanic. - Bănăt̨eanu REIE 3, 149 calls it Anatolian. - Connection with κάνναθρον is improbable.Page in Frisk: 1,29Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἄθρας

Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `number, payment' (Od.);Other forms: Through metathesis ἀμιθρός (Schwy. 268)Etymology: Derivation in - θμο- of the root in νήρι-τος `countless'; cf. the PN Έπήριτος, Arc. Πεδάριτος and the Arc. appellative Έπάριτοι `the chosen', Wackernagel Unt. 250, Philol. 86, 133ff. - Outside Greek one compares Germanic words, ONo. rīm n. `account', OHG. rīm m. `row, number', OIr. rīm `number'; also Lat. rītus `use, rite'? 76 ἅρμα 1
ἅρμα 1.Grammatical information: n. (pl.)Dialectal forms: Myc. amo \/ armo\/, dat. amotei, pl. amota, but it means `wheel'; amotejonade \/armoteiōna-de\/ `to the wheel workingplace'. On traces of the meaning `wheel' in Homer s. Panagl, Papers...Szemerényi (1992) 137-44. On the development (Myc. armho-, not yet * harmo-) Ruijgh, Études 48 n. 17.Compounds: ἁρματο-πηγός (Il.) `wheel-maker' etc. ἁρμάμαξα contains ἄμαξα (Ar.), unless it is an adapted Persian word. On βητάρμων s.v.Etymology: From ἀρ- `fit' in ἀραρίσκω; spiritus asper from original suffix - sm- (Schwyzer 523, Chantr. Form. 175), also in: ἁρμός (s. ἁρμόζω), ἁρμονία, ἁρμαλια (s.s.vv.). - Outside Greek there are several forms with m-suffix, e. g.Lat. arma pl. `weapons', armentum `herd' (independent formation), Arm. y-armar `fitting'. 77 αὐδή
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `(human) voice, sound, speech' (Il.).Other forms: *οὐδήεσσα is a suggestion of Aristotle for αὐδ., meant as `ἐπίγειος'; Beekes, Die Spr. 18, 1972, 127f.Derivatives: αὐδήεις `with (human) voice' (Il.); denom. verb αὐδάω, aor. αὐδῆσαι `talk, speak, speak to' (Il.). (Chantr.'s opposition of a god(dess) with a human voice, language as opposed to the language of the gods is wrong. It means `having a voice (to speak with)', which may be `human' or `beautiful' as the context requires; s. Beekes, l.c. 128 n.3.Etymology: Long since derived from a root au̯ed-, seen in ἀείδω, and with long grade in ἀ(Ϝ)ηδ-ών. An o-grade (* h₂uod-, perhaps with loss of the laryngeal: De Saussure's law) would be found in ` Ησί-(Ϝ)οδος and in Ϝοδόν (written γοδόν) γόητα and Ϝοδᾶν (written γ-) κλαίειν H. (but Chantr. considers the glosses unreliable). The zero grade was seen in ὑδέω. The problem is that * h₂u-ed- beside * h₂u-ei-d is not easy, and that a long vowel in *h₂u-ēd- is also not very probable; there is also discussion whether * h₂ud- gave ὑδ- (Beekes) or αὐδ- (Peters, Lar. 65ff, 72). - Outside Greek * h₂ued- perhaps in Skt. vádati `speak', with zero grade ud- in ud-itá-. (Lith. vadinù `call, name', however, has *- dʰ-: Winter's law). Long grade e. g. Skt. vāda- m. `sound, call', OCS vada `calumnia', OHG far-wāʒan `deny'. Uncertain Toch. A wätk-, B watk- `order'. - S. ἀηδών, ἀείδω, ὑδέω, οὐδήεσσα.Page in Frisk: 1,184Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > αὐδή

78 αὐλή
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `open court, courtyard' (seit Il.).Etymology: αὐλή, αὖλις are derivations of the root of ἰ-αύω, ἄεσα `pass the night (in the open air)' (s. v.), also seen in Arm. aw-t` `place to pass the night' and ag-anim `pass the night'. Also supposed in Toch. B aulāre, A olar `companion'.Page in Frisk: 1,186Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > αὐλή

79 βλώσκω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `go, come' (Il.).Other forms: Aor. μολεῖν, ἔβλω ἐφάνη, ὤχετο, ἔστη; fut. μολοῦμαι ( βλῶξαι, βλώξω Lyc.), perf. μέμβλωκα ( βέβλωκε ἠρεμεῖ, φύεται H.)Compounds: κατα-, προ-, ἐκ- etc. αὑτόμολος `deserter' (Hdt.); ἀγχίμολον ( ἦλθε, Il.), old absolutive Wackernagel, Mus. Helv. 1, 226ff.; ἀγχιβλώς ἄρτι παρών H.Etymology: Pres. βλώσκω \< *μλώ-σκω (cf. μολ-εῖν, μέ-μβλω-κα) from *ml̥h₃-sk- is clear. The aor. stem βλω- will have the same origin, with the zero grade from the plural. The nominal forms with - μολ- will have o-grade, * molh₃-. The aor. stem μολ-ε\/ο- is explained from metathesis in *μελο-μ, -ς, -τ \< * melh₃-. Harðarson, Wurzelaorist 169f, 224f, also assumes stressed l̥h₃ \> ολο, which is doubtful; the existence of a development μλω- (in ἔβλω) beside μολο- is improbable. I would expect *l̥h₃ \> αλ, which was replaced by ολ after the predominant o-vocalism. The metathesis is not an independent phonetic development, but part of this process of morphological reorganisation. - Outside Greek perhaps in Slavic, e.g. Serb. iz-mòlīti *`let come out', i.e. `show', Slov. molíti `hinstrecken, hinhalten'. - Uncertain Toch. A mlosk-, mlusk- `escape' (B mlutk ?). - Connection with μέλλω is phonetically improbable (because of the laryngeal), with μολεύω `cut off and transplant the shoots of trees' is semantically impossible.Page in Frisk: 1,246-247Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > βλώσκω

80 βράγχος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `hoarseness, angina' (Hp.),Other forms: also βάραγχος (Hippon.), βράγχη f. (Xenocr.) `id.' and βραγχία ἡ περιτράχηλος ἀλγηδών H.Derivatives: βραγχαλέος `hoarse' (Hp.), βραγχός `id.' (AP). - βραγχάω, βραγχιάω `have a sore throat' (Arist.); βραγχιάζοισθε πνίγοισθε H. - Separate βράγχια pl. `gills of fishes, bronchial tubes', also βαράγχια, βαράχνια (Hdn.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: The resemblance with βρόγχος `windpipe' may have caused the transition of the meaning of βράγχια. Fur. 128 connects βραχώδης τραχύς H. and βρακίας τραχεῖς τόπους H. (and βαρακινῃ̃σιν ἀκάνθαις. σκόλοψι H.); this gives βρακ-\/ βραχ-\/ βραγχ-, variations that are typical Pre-Gr. The aorist βραχεῖν `rattle, clash' (Johansson KZ 36, 345f.) may also be connected: produce a raw sound. The secondary vowel of βάραγχος (Schwyzer 278, 831) is phonetically easy, but also frequent in Pre-Gr. words (Fur. 378-385). - Outside Greek one adduces OIr. brong(a)ide `hoarse' (Fick 2, 186). -Page in Frisk: 1,262Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > βράγχος
