6 Common Hemp
The so-called common hemp is the hemp proper and is derived from the bast of Cannabis sativa, a shrub growing from 6 feet to 15 feet in height. Though originally a native of India and Persia, it is now cultivated in nearly all the temperate and tropical countries or the world. It is an annual plant, with a straight stalk, and elongated, highly dentated leaves. The leaves have a narcotic odour and occur in bunches of three, five or seven. Russia produces an enormous quantity, Poland also is a large producer, both these are of a lower quality than others. French hemp is much superior in quality to that from either Russia or Poland, being fine, white and lustrous. Italian hemp is also of a very high grade. Indian hemp is grown not so much for its fibre as for its narcotic properties. Japanese hemp is of excellent quality, and appears in trade in the form of very thin ribbons, smooth and glossy, of a light straw colour, and the frayed ends showing a fibre of exceeding fineness. Hemp is the oldest textile that has been used in Japan. Hemp fibre is obtained from the plant by a process of retting, similar to that used for flax. Dew retting is chiefly employed, that is, the stalks are spread out in the fields until the action of the elements causes the woody tissue and gums enclosing the fibres to decompose. It is said that 100 parts of raw hemp produce 25 parts of raw fibre or filasse; and loo parts of the latter yields 65 parts of combed filasse and 32 parts of tow. The commercial fibre is pearly-grey, yellowish or greenish to brown in colour, and from 40-in. to 80-in. long. It is not as fine as linen, though its tensile strength is appreciably greater. The best qualities of hemp are very light in colour and possess a high lustre almost equal to linen. Hemp is principally used for twines and cordage, for which its great strength eminently adapts it, and also because it is very durable and does not rot in water. The better qualities of hemp are also used for " linen " crash, homespuns, carpets and as warp in making carpets and mgs. -

12 BEIN
* * *n.1) bone; láta með beini ganga, to deal blows to the very bone, give no quarter; hafa bein í hendi, to be well off;* * *n. a word common to the Teut. idioms and peculiar to them; [the Goth. word is not on record, as Luke xxiv. 39 and John xix. 36 are lost in Ulf.; A. S. bân; Engl. bone; Germ. bein; Swed.-Dan. ben (been). Sansk., Gr., Lat., and the Slav. languages agree in a totally different root; Sansk. asthi; Gr. οστέον; Lat. os; the Slav. branch all with an initial c, cp. the Lat. costa. Vide Grimm (s. v.), who suggests a relation to Gr. βαίνω; but the native Icel. words beinn, rectus, and beina, promovere, are more likely roots; the original sense might thus be crus, Gr. σκέλος, but Lat. os the secondary one]:— a bone.I. spec. the leg from the knee to the foot; freq. in Swed. and Dan., but very rare and nearly obsolete in Icel., where leggr is the common word; hosa strengd at beini, Eg. 602, Fms. x. 331; kálfar á beinum fram, N. G. L. i. 339.II. gener. = Lat. os, a bone, but originally the bones with marrow (Germ. knochen), as may be inferred from the passages, þá er mergund ef b. er í sundr til mergjar, þat er mergr er í, Grág. ii. 11, i. 442, Fms. vii. 118, Vápn. 21, Fas. i. 66, Vígl. 20; stór bein í andliti, with a strongly-marked, high-boned face, Band. 7, whence stórbeinóttr, q. v.; viðbeina, a collar-bone; höfuðbein, pl. head-bones, the scull around the temples and the forehead; er gamlir grísir skyldu halda mér at höfuðbeinum, Grett. (in a verse); strjúka höfuðbeinin; málbein, os loquendi, a small bone in the head; hence the phrase, láta málbeinið ganga, of one talking incessantly and foolishly: metaph. in phrases, láta ganga með beini, to deal blows to the very marrow, deal severely, Ld. 230; hafa bein í hendi (the Danes say, have been i næsen), to have a boned hand, i. e. strength and power, Hrafn. 10, Al. 29.2. pl. relics, remains (ashes); the phrase, bera bein, to repose, rest, be buried; far þú út til Íslands, þar mun þér auðit verða beinin at bera, Grett. 148, Nj. 201; ok iðrast nú að aptr hvarf að bera b. blá við hrjóstr, Bjarni, 57:—of the relics of saints, Bs. 468, 469; hence beina-færsla, u, f. removal of bones (translatio); in the Catholic age, when churches were removed, the churchyard was dug up and the bones removed also, vide Eb. (in fine), Bjarn. 19, K. Þ. K. 40, Eg. (in fine).COMPDS: beinavatn, beinagrind, beináta, beinbrot, beinkröm, beinkveisa, beinsullr, beinverkir. -
13 रुद्र
rudrarudrámfn. (prob.) crying, howling, roaring, dreadful, terrific, terrible, horrible (applied to the Aṡvins, Agni, Indra, Mitra, Varuṇa, andᅠ the spáṡaḥ) RV. AV. (accord. toᅠ others « red, shining, glittering», fr. a rud orᅠ rudh connected with rudhira;
others « strong, having orᅠ bestowing strength orᅠ power», fr. a rud = vṛid, vṛidh;
native authorities give alsoᅠ the following meanings, « driving away evil» ;
« running about andᅠ roaring», fr. ru + dra = 2. dru;
« praiseworthy, to be praised» ;
« a praiser, worshipper» = stotṛi Naigh. III, 16);
m. « Roarer orᅠ Howler»
N. of the god of tempests andᅠ father andᅠ ruler of the Rudras andᅠ Maruts
(in the Veda he is closely connected with Indra andᅠ still more with Agni, the god of fire, which, as a destroying agent, rages andᅠ crackles like the roaring storm, andᅠ alsoᅠ with Kāla orᅠ Time the all-consumer, with whom he is afterwards identified;
though generally represented as a destroying deity, whose terrible shafts bring death orᅠ disease on men andᅠ cattle, he has alsoᅠ the epithet ṡiva, « benevolent» orᅠ « auspicious», andᅠ is even supposed to possess healing powers from his chasing away vapours andᅠ purifying the atmosphere;
in the later mythology the word ṡiva, which does not occur as a name in the Veda, was employed, first as an euphemistic epithet andᅠ then as a real name for Rudra, who lost his special connection with storms andᅠ developed into a form of the disintegrating andᅠ reintegrating principle;
while a new class of beings, described as eleven < orᅠ thirty-three> in number, though still called Rudras, took the place of the original Rudras orᅠ Maruts:
in VP. I, 7, Rudra is said to have sprung from Brahmā. 's forehead, andᅠ to have afterwards separated himself into a figure half male andᅠ half female, the former portion separating again into the 11 Rudras,
hence these later Rudras are sometimes regarded as inferior manifestations of Ṡiva, andᅠ most of their names, which are variously given in the different Purāṇas, are alsoᅠ names of Ṡiva;
those of the VāyuP. are Ajai ͡kapad, Ahir-budhnya, Hara, Nirṛita, Īṡvara, Bhuvana, Aṇgāraka, Ardha-ketu, Mṛityu, Sarpa, Kapālin;
accord. toᅠ others the Rudras are represented as children of Kaṡyapa andᅠ Surabhi orᅠ of Brahmā. andᅠ Surabhi orᅠ of Bhūta andᅠ Su-rūpā;
accord. toᅠ VP. I, 8, Rudra is one of the 8 forms of Ṡiva;
elsewhere he is reckoned among the Dik-pālas as regent of the north-east quarter) RV. etc. etc. (cf. RTL. 75 etc..);
N. of the number « eleven» (from the 11 Rudras) VarBṛS. ;

du. (incorrect acc. to Vām. V, 2, 1) Rudra andᅠ Rudrāṇi (cf. alsoᅠ bhavā-r- andᅠ somā-rudra);

an abbreviated N. for the texts orᅠ hymns addressed to Rudra GṛṠrS. Gaut. Vas. (cf. rudra-japa);
