Затем он видит, как она играет на арфе в загородной таверне родителей. Он выводит ее на берег Дуная, они гуляют под цветущими яблонями. Мрачный лиризм режиссера торжествует в этом фильме, самом классическом и наиболее связном за всю его карьеру. Это антимелодрама: в ней добрые чувства постоянно подвергаются осмеянию, а деньги, карьерные интересы, пошлость, уродство и корысть побеждают любовь. Показанный Штрохаймом образ упадочной и развращенной Вены не относится к определенному времени и становится вневременным; Вена – прежде всего особенно выразительный фон, прекрасно подходящий для безысходного пессимизма режиссера. В мире Штрохайма ни один социальный класс не избавлен от несчастья, хотя аристократы, как правило, лучше прочих умеют скрывать свои чувства. В зените славы (всего лишь мнимой), как и в падении (неизбежном), мужчина и женщина у Штрохайма остаются несовершенными и часто обездоленными существами, которые способны испытывать сильные чувства, однако не знают способов, как обратить эти чувства в счастье и долговременное равновесие. Проблема в том, чтобы понять, кроется ли за этой картиной человечества в упадке и висящего над ним проклятия нечто большее, чем измученное эго режиссера.
