То, что на рациональном уровне объясняется жадностью и коварством, на уровне психоаналитическом превращается в настоящую дикость, нутряную злобу, безумие и бред. На всем протяжении этой странной одиссеи, полной кровавых поворотов, ум героини сочетается с самыми безудержными смертельными инстинктами.Касл особенно знаменит своим чувством юмора. Это чувство юмора не раз помогало ему то превратить мрачный и безумный сюжет в сюрреалистический и авангардистский фарс (Мурашка, The Tingler, 1959), то создать превосходный фильм в самом неблагодарном жанре - фантастической комедии для детей (Чпок, Zotz, 1962); то, наконец, сохранить лицо во 2-разрядных кровожадных аттракционах (Смирительная рубашка, Strait-Jacket, 1964; Ходящий в ночи, The Night Walker, 1964), которые представляют собой наименее интересную часть его творчества. Перед леденящей душу финальной сценой показ останавливался и раздавался записанный на пленку голос Касла. Режиссер предупреждал зрителей, что концовка фильма может травмировать их чувства, и предлагал тем, кто пожелает, покинуть зрительный зал и получить в кассе деньги за билет. Легко представить, что прокатчики проявили мало энтузиазма при мысли о том, что придется возвращать кому-то деньги из кассы. Этот метод, в качестве эксперимента, был проверен на кинотеатре одного городка в Огайо. Зал был набит битком, но после «паузы ужаса» почти целиком опустел.
