Religionswiss. 18, 127ff. but also Kretschmer Glotta 9, 229f., mostly explained as a colour name, but rather a substratum word (Szemerényi 1964 = Syncope, 207, Beekes 1998 FS Watkins 25 on - υια.). (after the compounds). αἱμωδέω s.s.v.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: αἷμα replaces the old word, ἔαρ. The connection with OHG seim `virgin honey', from PIE * sei- `to drip' (Pok. 889) does not explain the Greek a-vocalism; Oehl IF 57, 27. To Skt. iṣ- `sap, drink' Sommer Lautst. 29ff. Cf. also αἰονάω, ἰχώρ. S. Szemerényi Gnomon 43 (1971) 651.Page in Frisk: 1,39Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > αἷμα

6 ἄλσος
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `sacred grove' (Il.).Derivatives: ἀλσίνη a plant, (Dsc.); André, Noms de plantes; cf. CEG 6.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: The name of the temple-area in Olympia, Ἄλτις f., would be identical with ἄλσος, Paus. 5, 10, 1; on this basis one reconstructs *ἄλτι̯ος for ἄλσος. Fur. 249, 253 accepts the equation, but interprets it in the context of other instances of dental\/sibilant in substr. words ( ἄννηθον\/ ἄνησον). Benfey Or. u. Occ. 1, 193 and others assumed (s. Kretschmer Glotta 22, 246f.) *ἦνος n. `face' (but Skt. * ānas- does not exist; ā́nana- n. `mouth' is of uncertain interpretation). 11 βῑνέω
βῑνέωGrammatical information: v.Meaning: `coïre, futuere, τὸ βίᾳ μίγνυσθαι' (Ar., Sol. ap. H.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Vulgar word. Often combined with βία `violence', but DELG points out that there is no evidence for violence. One also compared ζάει βινεῖ H.; how? Skt. jinā́ti `overpower, suppress' nor ptc. jī-na- (only gramm.) = *βῑνός convince. Not with Palmer, Minos 5 (1957) 62 to δῑνέω, which does not fit semantically. De Lamberterie, CEG 1, suggests, because of the variant βενέω, * gʷen- `woman' with ῑ from κῑνέω; but we expect *δεν- (cf. μνάομαι).Page in Frisk: 1,237Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > βῑνέω

16 γαμφηλαί
Grammatical information: f. pl.Meaning: `jaws of animals' (Il.).Other forms: γναμφαί γνάθοι H.Derivatives: Backformation γαμφαί (Lyc.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Cf. τράχηλος etc. Generally connected with γόμφος<< (s.v.), γομφίος, but the α-vocalism is problematic: neither a popular word nor zero grade *γαφ- with restored nasal; nor influence from γαμψός or γναμπτήρ (CEG 1) seems sufficient explanation. The suffix - ηλ- occurs in Pre-Greek (Beekes, Pre-Greek), so the word may be Pre-Greek. - Pedersen (s. WP. 1, 534) pointed to Russ. gubá `lip' etc..Page in Frisk: 1,288Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > γαμφηλαί

17 γνάμπτω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `bend' (Il.).Derivatives: γναμπτήρ `jaw' (Androm. ap. Gal.), cf. γναμφαί s.v. γαμφηλαί; γνάμψις `bending' (EM). Without (dissimilated?) (second) nasal γνάπτει κάμπτει and γναπτός = γναμπτός H.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: It is mostly stated that γνάμπτω was influenced by κάμπτω (cf. κνάμπτω), so that all explanations are uncertain. But γνάμπτω has not the κ- of κάμπτω, nor can the - ν- have been taken from there. Note that γναμπ- cannot have a IE preform (see on γνάθος). But κάμπτω too does not look safely IE. However, a Pre-Greek process giving and `inserted' -ν is not known to me. (Did κν- give γν-?) (The consequences of the remark of N.G. in R.Ph. 70 (1996) =CEG 1 s.v. γνάμπτω; Κλυταιμ(ν)ηστρα?) are unclear to me.Page in Frisk: 1,316Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > γνάμπτω
