The active aorist ἔ-δω-κ-α (with - κ- after ἔθηκα, ἧκα, s. 3 θαλυκρός
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `warm, glowing' (Call. Fr. anon. 69, AP 5, 219), in H. = ἰταμόν, λαμπρόν, βλοσυρόν, ἀναιδές, πανοῦργον, with θαλυκρέονται ψεύδονται H.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Beside the present θαλύσσομαι the aorist had θαλύψαι (Schulze GGA 1897, 874; Schwyzer 704). The connection with θάλπω is explained by Brugmann I.2 1, 596, Gramm.4 137 (s. also Schwyzer 296), assuming that - π- represents a kʷ, "dessen labialer Nachschlag in θαλύσσομαι usw. in die vorausgehende Silbe getreten sei mit daraus folgender Beibehaltung des - κ-"; both forms can be explained from * dʰal-ukʷ- followed by i̯ or s. In θαλυκρός we have k after u. S. on θάλπω. - Unclear ἀλυκρός, s. 1. ἀλέα `warmth'.Page in Frisk: 1,650-651Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > θαλυκρός

4 οἴμη
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `song, chant, saga, tale' (Od., A. R., Call. a.o.); in similar use also οἶμος ἀοιδῆς (h. Merc. 451), ἐπέων οἶμον (Pi. O. 9, 47), λύρης οἴμους (Call. Iov. 97).Derivatives: ἄοιμον ἄρρητον H., substant. hypostasis προοίμ-ιον (Pi., Att. prose), φροίμ-ιον (trag.) n., prop. "what stands πρὸ οἴμης or πρὸ οἴμου ( οἵμου, s. οἶμος)", `start of the song, introductory chant, introduction, preamble', Lat. pro- oemium, cf. Koller Phil. 100, 187 ff. Unclear παροιμία, s. v.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Because of the occasional connection of masc. οἶμος with song and play, it is obvious to connect οἴμη with οἶμος `walk, way'. The word would have got a special meaning in the language of the Aoedes. Thus (after the old interpretation, s. Curtius 401) a.o. still Güntert Kalypso 201 ff., Becker Das Bild des Weges 36f., 68ff., Bieler RhM 85, 240ff., Diehl RhM 89, 88, Nilsson Die Antike 14, 27; also Pagliaro Ric. ling. 2, 25 ff. (to the group of ἱμάς, s. v.; similarly a. o. Čop Sprache 6, 5). -- After Osthoff BB 24, 158ff. however οἴμη and οἶμος `song' must be separated from οἶμος `walk, way' and connected with OWNo seiðr m. `kind of sorcery', Skt. sā́man n. `song', what supposes partly suffixchange (* soi-mā: * soi-to-s), partly an ablaut sē[i]-: soi- (which is improbable); cf. WP. 2, 509 f. Improbable Benveniste BSL 50, 39 f. (from *som-i̯o- to Hitt. išhamāi- `sing'); cf. (but it may also mean an urgent repetition of the request: B-D-F §441, 1; AFridrichsen, ConNeot 1, ’36, 10–13; Athen. Tafel Elderkin 2 [III A.D.]: Hesperia 6, ’37, 383ff, ln. 7 a fervent invocation in prayer: ναὶ κύριε Τυφώς, ἐκδίκησον … καὶ βοήθησον αὐτῷ; PGM 1, 216 ναί, κύριε; cp. 36, 227); Hv 3, 3, 1; 4, 3, 1; m 6, 1, 1. But Mt 5:37 reads ἔστω ὁ λόγος ὑμῶν ναὶ ναί, οὒ οὔ i.e., a clear ‘yes’, a clear ‘no’ and nothing more (ναί doubled also Archilochus [VII B.C.] 99 Diehl3; Alciphron 4, 13, 8; Theodor. Prodr. 8, 321 Hercher; PGM 1, 90; PMinear, NovT 13, ’71, 1–13). Yet many (B-D-F §432, 1; Wlh., EKlostermann, M‘Neile on Mt 5:37; CTorrey, The Four Gospels ’33, 291; ELittmann, ZNW 34, ’35, 23f) assume that Mt 5:37 has the same sense as Js 5:12; the Koridethi gosp. (ms. Θ) assimilates the text of the Mt pass. to the one in Js.—Paul denies that, in forming his plans, he has proceeded in such a way ἵνα ᾖ παρʼ ἐμοὶ τὸ ναὶ ναὶ καὶ τὸ οὒ οὔ that my ‘yes’ should at the same time be ‘no’ 2 Cor 1:17; cp. vs. 18. This is just as impossible as that in the gospel ναὶ καὶ οὔ ‘yes’ and ‘no’ are preached at the same time vs. 19a. Rather, in Jesus Christ there is only ‘yes’ vs. 19b to all the promises of God vs. 20.—EKutsch, Eure Rede aber sei ja ja, nein nein: EvTh ’60, 206–18.—DELG. M-M.
