Also γραίνειν ἐσθίειν H.Derivatives: γράστις f. `green fodder' (pap., Hippiatr.); usual κράστις (Ar.), prob. due to folk etymological connection with another (unknown) word; γραστίζω `feed at grass' (Gp., Hippiatr.), γραστισμός ( Hippiatr.); κραστίζομαι `graze' (Sophr.), κρατήριον `mangar' (Poll.). Also γράσσις ( PHamb. 39 II, IIp). With prefix καγρᾶ καταφαγᾶς. Σαλαμίνιοι H. (s. Bechtel Dial. 1, 421 and 446).Etymology: Copared with Skt. grásate `devour' ( γράω \< *gr̥s-ō ? grásate \< * gres-; PIE * gras- is impossible). In Germanic perhaps ONo. krās f. `dainty' \< * grēs-ā; uncertain Lat. grāmen (not to the Germ. and the Lat. word). On γράσος s. v. Cf. γαστήρ. 30 δένδρεον
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `tree' (Hom., Pi.)Compounds: Compp. 1. subst. καρυό-, λιθό-, ῥοδό-, σταφυλό-; 2. many bahuvrihi's in - δενδρος; δένδρος n., m. (Ion. Dor.; s. below)Derivatives: δενδρ-ύφιον (Thphr.; s. Schwyzer 471 n. 7; untenable Specht Ursprung 267), δενδρίον (Agathokl.). - δενδρώδης `rich in trees' (Hp.), δενδρήεις `rich in trees' (Od.; s. Schwyzer 527), δενδρίτης, - ῖτις `belonging to the tree', also name of a stone (Thphr.; vgl. Redard Les noms grecs en - της [s. Index]), rare δενδρώτης, - ῶτις `with tree' (Hdn., E.; cf. Fraenkel Nom. ag. 2, 128 A. 2, Redard 13); δενδρικός `belonging to a tree' (Thphr.), δενδριακός `id.' (AP), δένδρινος `id.' (gloss.), δενδραῖος `from trees' (Nonn.), δενδράς f. `id.' (Nonn.). - δενδρών and δένδρωμα `thicket' (Aq.). - Denomin. δενδρόομαι, - όω `grow to a tree, change into a tree' (Thphr.) with δένδρωσις (Thphr.). - On δενδρυάζω s. δενδρύω.Etymology: The form δένδρος is from the plural forms δένδρεα, - έων (from δένδρεον) ; the usual Attic form δένδρον is also secondary (cf. ἀδελφός from ἀδελφεός? and Schwyzer 583.), Wackernagel Unt. 109f., Shipp Studies 21f., 55. - δένδρεον \< *δένδρεϜον agrees with the Germanic word for `tree', Goth. triu, OE treow `tree' etc., PGm. *treu̯a- \< IE *dreu̯o-; though the form of the reuplication is rare (not with DELG to γάγγραινα). Further s. δόρυ, δρῦς. (Skt. daṇḍá- m. `stick, club' acc. to Kuiper Proto-Munda Words in Sanskrit 75ff. is a local LW [loanword].) Janda, Stock und Stein (1977) assumes *dem-dreu̯-om `tree planted near the house', like Strunk, Analecta Indoeuropaea Cracoviensia, vol. II: Kurylowicz Memorial Volume. Part One. Ed. W. Smoczyński, 357-63. (But does this type of compound exist?).Page in Frisk: 1,365-366Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > δένδρεον

31 κανθύλη
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `swelling, tumour', only in κανθύλας τὰς ἀνοιδήσεις. Αἰσχύλος Σαλαμινίαις (Fr. 220) H. (on alphabet. incorrect place); also κονθηλαί αἱ ἀνοιδήσεις H. -Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: The comparison with a Germanic word for ` ulcer, pus', e. g. OHG gund, Goth. gunds `γάγγραινα' (Holthausen KZ 28, 282), would require κονθ- or that κανθ- is secondary for *καθ-; "zur letzteren, sehr entfernten Möglichkeit Schwyzer 343 Zus. 1". Strömbergs proposal, Wortstudien 94, to derive κανθύλη from the name of the ass, κάνθων, κανθήλιος, is semant. not convincing. - The variation α\/ο is Pre-Greek, as is the suffix (Fur. 201 n. 14).Page in Frisk: 1,778-779Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κανθύλη

32 καρκίνος
Grammatical information: m. (Epich., IA.)Meaning: `crab' (on the meaning Thompson Fishes s. v.), metaph.. `ulcer, pair of pincers, kind of shoe etc.', also name of a constellation (Scherer Gestirnnamen 167f.). -Derivatives: Diminut. καρκίνιον (Arist., Hp.), also `kind of slipper' (Herod.), καρκινάς, - άδος f. (Gal., Ael.); καρκινίας m. name of a precious stone (Plin.; after the colour; as καπνίας a. o.; Chantraine Formation 94); καρκινευτής `crab-catcher' (Artem. 2, 14; after ἁλιευτής, ὀρνιθευτής a. o.); καρκινώδης `crab-like' (Arist., medic.). Denomin. verb καρκινόω `bend, crook one's fingers' (Antiph., Thphr.; cf. Strömberg Theophrastea 65), - όομαι `become cancerous, suffer from cancer' (Hp.) with καρκίνωμα `cancer' (medic.), καρκίνωσις `formation of dangerous growth' (Aët.); καρκίνωθρον (codd. - αθρον, - ηθρον) plant name, `Polygonum aviculare' (Dsc. 4, 4; after Strömberg Pflanzennamen 147 prop. "Krebsmittel" [?]; rather of the crab-like spreading roots).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Clearly connected with Lat. cancer `crab', Skt. karkaṭa- `id.'; the morphological details however are not all clear. As in Lat. cancer from * car-cro-s καρκίνος may also have had a dissimilation of r-sounds with addition of the ινο-suffix (cf. Schwyzer 490); on the formation of Skt. karkaṭa- Wackernagel-Debrunner 2: 2, 157 (etymological doubts in Mayrhofer KEWA s. v.). - From καρκίνος as LW [loanword]. Skt. karki(n)- `the crab in the zodiac' (with karka- `crab' [lex.] as backformation?). - Connection with the adjective for `hard' (s. κάρκαρος, κράτος) seems quite possible. Cf. W.-Hofmann s. cancer. - The Sanskrit word is probably not cognate (Mayrhofer, EWAia 64, Fur. 129). Fur. connects κάρχαι καρκίνοι, καὶ \<κ\> όχλοι. Σικελοί H. [not mentioned in Frisk, DELG], which is evident. This poves Pre-Greek origin. Fur. doubts the correctnes of Lat. cancer \< * karkro-, which cannot be proven. Fur. prefers to connct γάγγραινα, γάγγλιον. - ινο- can be a Pre-Greek suffix (Fur. 129 n. 54; Beekes, Pre-Greek, Suffixes; Fur. also comments on the accentuation). He also adduces (130) the PN Κερκίνος and the river name Κερκινεύς (Thessaly) with *κερκιν-.Page in Frisk: 1,789-790Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > καρκίνος
