54 ἄκανος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: a thistle, `Atractylis gummifera', `dorniger Fruchtkopf' (Thphr.);Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Cf. for the formation πλάτανος, ῥάφανος, πύανος etc.; the word is generally derived from ἀκ- `sharp', but the suffix - ανος rather points to a non-IE word (words like ἄκων, ἀκόνη rather confirm that the - α- is foreign).Page in Frisk: 1,51Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἄκανος

56 ἐπηετανός
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: prob. `sufficient, rich, everlasting' (Od.).Origin: IE [Indo-European]X [probably] [1175] *u̯et-os `year'Etymology: Prop. `lasting the whole year' (like ἐπ-έτ-ειος, ἐπ-ετ-ήσιος) with - η- as in ἐπήβολος (s. v.) a. o. and suffixal - ανος as in σητάνιος (s. v.). To suppose haplology *-Ϝετι-τανος or *-Ϝετο-τανος (like diūtinus a. o.; Brugmann Sächs. Ber. 1901, 101, 105; Grundr. 22: 1, 285; Schulze Kl. 57 ἦρα
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `please somebody' ( ἐπὶ) ἦρα φερειν (Il.), posthom. w. gen. = χάριν `to somebody's pleasure' (B., Call.).Other forms: acc. sg. (pl. n.?).Derivatives: ἐρί-ηρες pl.`faithful' s. v., also ἐπίηρος, ἐπιήρ-ανος `acceptable, pleasant, grateful', s. vv. Also βριηρόν μεγάλως κεχαρισμένον H. (wrong for ἐρί- ?). PN Πολυ-ήρης a. o. (Bechtel Hist. Personennamen 194f.). - On Lesb. ἠρώνα s.v..Origin: IE [Indo-European] [1165] *uēr- `friendliness'Etymology: An original Ϝῆρ-α (on the digamma Chantraine Gramm. 1, 152; on the formation Sommer Nominalkomp. 138) gives several formal possibilities for connection. A connection with Lat. se-vērus `earnest' (\< * sē vērō "without friendliness"), Germ., e. g. OWNo. vǣrr `friendly', OHG ala-wāri ` friendly', further to the word for `true', Lat. vērus = OIr. fir = Germ., e. g. OHG wār, OCS věra `faith' a. o. seems possible (Prellwitz KZ 44, 152, Bechtel Lex. 138 a. o.). In Greek some try to connect ἑορτη, ἔρανος, ἔροτις, s. vv. - Not with Fick 1, 130, Prellwitz a. o. and Bq to Skt. vr̥ṇóti `avert' etc. (s. ἔρυμαι). 58 θῠσανος
θῠσανοςGrammatical information: m.Meaning: `tassels, fringe' (Il.)Other forms: gew. pl. - οι; on θυσσανόεις s. belowDerivatives: θυσσανόεις (Il.; on - σσ- s. below), θυσανωτός (Hdt., J.) `framed with tassels', θυσανώδης `tassel-like' (Thphr.), - ηδόν adv. `id.' (Ael.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Technical word in - ανος (Chantraine Formation 200). Acc. to Persson Beitr. 1, 45 from *θύσσα, from *θύθ-ι̯α, identical with Latv. duša `bundle of straw etc.'; IE *dhudh-i̯ă. A primary yot-present in θύσσεται τινάσσεται H, but Latte states that the word is an invention of grammarians to explain θύσανος. Skt. dúdhi- `tempestuous' and several Germ. words; s. Pok. 264f., but the meaning of these words is far off; a separate IE * dhudh- can hardly be reconstructed. - Older suggestions in Bq. - The word seems hardly IE. The variation σ\/σσ rather points to Pre-Greek (Fur. 387, who refers to e.g. ᾽Ὀδυσ(σ)εύς), which is understandable for a word of this meaning.Page in Frisk: 1,697Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > θῠσανος

59 κλῑβανος
κλί̄βανοςGrammatical information: m.Meaning: `potter's oven', prop. an earthenware or iron, on top less wide and with air-holes provided pot, where bread was baked; metaph. comparable objects: `pot to haul water, rock-hole etc.'(Hdt., Epich., LXX, pap., NT.)Other forms: also, prob. secondary (dissimilation?; Schwyzer 259), κρίβανος (Com.) m., κρίβανον n. (Str., Ael.).Derivatives: (mostly κλιβ-): κλιβάνιος, - ικός `baker's oven' (pap.), - ιον `oven for baking' (pap.), - ίτης ( ἄρτος) `in a κ. baked bread' (Com.; Redard Les noms grec en - της 89), κριβανωτός `in an oven baked bread' (Alcm. 20, Ar.), κριβάνας πλακοῦντάς τινας H.; κλιβανεύς `baker', - εῖον `bakery' (pap.). κλιβανάριος from Lat. clībanārius `armoured knight' (since IVp; from the soldiers language or after Aram. tanûr `oven, armour'?; cf. Schwyzer 39). - Hypostasis ἐπικλιβάνιος ( θεά) `ruling over the oven' (Karneades).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Technical LW [loanword] in - ανος (Chantraine Formation 200, Schwyzer 489f.); origin unknown. Acc. to Walde Lat. et. Wb.2 s. lībum to the Germ. word for `Laib bread', Goth. hlaifs etc. as loan from the north; against this (W.-)Hofmann s. v. Diff. hypotheses in Lewy Fremdw. 105f. (Semitic), and Mohl MSL 7, 403 (uralaltaic); further s. W.-Hofmann s. lībum. The word was taken over in Latin, where it seems to have a short i. Whether ρ or λ is original is unknown. Fur. 387 ρ and λ interchange in Pre-Greek, from where the word may well have come; baking bread was rather old. - The Latin word has nothing to do with the rest, but derives from Middle Pers. grībān `coat of arms' (cf. grīva-pāna- `neck-protector'); Rundgren, Orient. Bel.), κοίνωσις `intercourse' (Plu.).Etymology: If κοινός stands for *κονι̯ός, it agrees (through older *κομι̯ός or to CGr. *κον?, Schwyzer 309) with an Italo-Celtic preposition (prefix), e. g. Lat. cum, com- ( con-), Gaul. com- `with, together with', IE. adverb * kom `together'; here prob. also the prefixes Germ., e. g. Goth. ga-, Alb. kë- `with-'. - Wrong older interpretations in Bq.Page in Frisk: 1,892-893Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κοινός
