После того как Роллз при самозащите случайно убил комиссара, Анжелика решила выйти замуж за Сиднея, хотя любила Роллза. Позднее она примирилась с Роллзом и, подхватив опасную тропическую лихорадку, умерла у него на руках.Теперь же бывшие соперники вновь объединяют усилия, чтобы поднять со дна сокровища «Красной ведьмы». Его творчество заботится в первую очередь о непредсказуемости сюжета, характеров и даже страстей. Людвиг описывает страсти без всякого нравоучения и создает условия для романтического преувеличения, которому для полного раскрытия на экране вовсе не требуется ни лиризм, ни пафос, ничуть, впрочем, не свойственные авторской интонации Людвига. По ходу довольно сложного и извилистого действия (выше вкратце изложена лишь его часть) мы понимаем, что у Роллза и Сиднея, этих братьев-врагов, так странно похожих друг на друга, жажда золота, как бы сильна ни была она, скрывает некогда сильное соперничество и страсть к женщине. И обе страсти становятся частью другой, превосходящей и усиливающей их, опьяняющей любви к морю, синониму свободы и приключений.В сюжете традиционное голливудское противопоставление добра и зла терпит поражение. «Хороший» Роллз и «плохой» Сидней стоят друг друга: в моральном отношении они абсолютно взаимозаменяемы. И классический хэппи-энд оказывается применим лишь к паре второстепенных персоналией – Сэму и Телее. Сидней остается своеобразным живым мертвецом, прикованным к своему острову. Роллз и Анжелика, погибнув порознь, встретятся за пределами времени и призраками воспарят к вечности на прекрасном корабле. Это лишь один из многих поэтических образов, с барской небрежностью создаваемых Людвигом. Например, так же невозможно забыть хрупкую Анжелику (Гейл Расселл), играющую Шопена на тихоокеанском острове, или раздавленное тело Роллза, всплывающее на поверхность после неравной борьбы со спрутом.Людвиг-неизвестный, Людвиг-великолепный плавал в Голливуде как рыба в воде. Он отметал штампы и заменял их странной оригинальностью, почти царственным блеском, спокойной и втайне нарастающей поэзией. Этот режиссер, принадлежавший к «горсточке счастливцев», нравился и зрителям, и коллегам.
