GUARDIA CIVIL The Guardia Civil, commonly referred to as la Benemérita, is the oldest of Spain's various police forces. A paramilitary force like the French Gendarmerie, it was set up in 1844 to combat banditry in rural areas, but was also used as an instrument of repression in the cities. Under Franco it was resented by many as an oppressive, reactionary force, and was especially hated in the Basque Country. With the return of democracy, Franco's despised Policía Armada were reformed as the Policía Nacional, and the present-day role of the Guardia Civil was redefined. They are mainly stationed in rural areas, and their duties include policing highways and frontiers and taking part in anti-terrorist operations. Their traditional tunics and capes have been replaced by a green uniform, and the famous black patent-leather three-cornered hats are now reserved for ceremonial occasions.guardia urbana — city police, town police

m.1 Gongorism (literature).2 euphuism, Gongorism.* * *1 Gongorism* * *SM (Literat) latinized, precious and highly metaphorical style (esp 17th century)CULTERANISMO, CONCEPTISMO Culteranismo and conceptismo were opposing literary fashions which developed in the early 17th century in Spain. Luis de Góngora was the main exponent of culteranismo, also known as gongorismo. His poetry was very learned in style, full of metaphor, classical allusions, neologisms and deliberate syntactic playfulness. By contrast, conceptismo, as championed by Francisco de Quevedo, meant very precise, economic and rational language with complex ideas presented in a simple and succinct style. Góngora, who was much vilified in his time, and not only by Quevedo, found posthumous favour with generations of modern Spanish poets, most notably the Generación del 27. In the Middle Ages Catalan military expansion spread the use of the language beyond modern Catalonia, but following the unification of Castile and Aragon the language lost ground to Castilian. During the Franco régime the use of Catalan and other minority national languages was prohibited in the media and in public institutions. This, together with the influx of Castilian-speaking immigrants, posed a threat to the survival of the language. Since 1979, when Catalonia's autonomous government, the Generalitat, was re-established and Catalan gained lengua cooficial status, the language has returned to public life in Catalonia and is flourishing. Indeed, many Catalan authors publish first in Catalan and only later in Castilian. Outside Catalonia, Catalan is also spoken by large numbers of people in the Balearic Islands and Andorra. Like Spanish (“castellano”) and Galician (“gallego”), it developed from late Latin. It is spoken in Catalonia in northeastern Spain, and closely related languages are also spoken in the Balearic Islands (“mallorquín”) and the Valencian region (“valenciano”). Catalonia's economic development in the latter part of the 19th century encouraged a renaissance in the use of the language as a literary medium. During Franco's dictatorship (1939-75), Catalan was effectively banned for official purposes, but it continued to be used in everyday life as well as in literature. In Spain it is also called a carné, and all Spanish citizens have to carry one from the age of fourteen. The card is renewed every five or ten years at police stations, and must be shown to police upon demand. A similar document, the “Cédula (Nacional) de Identidad” is carried in Colombia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela, Argentina and Chile. In 2006 Spain began introducing an electronic identity card, which has a microchip containing the holder's personal details in digitized form.* * *m document* * *documento nm: document* * *documento n document -

The first stage, ESO, or Educación Secundaria Obligatoria, is for 12- to 16-year-olds. It is free and compulsory and includes both vocational and academic subjects. Students are awarded the Título de Graduado en Educación Secundaria on successful completion at age 16 and can leave school at this point. If they choose to continue their education they go on to the second stage, which consists of either the academically orientated Bachillerato or the vocational Formación Profesional Específica.See:* * ** * *Ex.
