2.SM / F LAm (Pol) missing personLOS DESAPARECIDOS Los desaparecidos is the name given to those who disappeared during the military dictatorships in the Southern Cone in the 1970s. Thousands of people were taken from their homes, schools and places of work and never seen again. Few of "the disappeared" were ever found alive, although a certain number of bodies were recovered in mass graves. Families of the victims joined forces to form pressure groups like Argentina's Madres y Abuelas de la Plaza de Mayo, but although some managed to identify and recover the bodies of their relatives, the perpetrators were rarely brought to justice.número de muertos, heridos y desaparecidos — number of dead, wounded and missing

[en catástrofe] missing person;ha habido veinte muertos y tres desaparecidos twenty people have been killed and three are missing2. [en represión política] missing person [kidnapped and possibly murdered by the authorities]DESAPARECIDOSThe kidnap of alleged subversives and holding of them in undisclosed locations became a widespread repressive technique in many Latin American countries from the 1960s onwards, and is especially associated with the period of the “guerra sucia” (dirty war) in Argentina, Uruguay and Chile in the 1970s. Those kidnapped, whether by the military, secret police or paramilitary groups, were usually tortured and many were killed. The bodies were disposed of in secret, and in some cases they were dropped from planes over the open sea. Surviving friends and relatives lived for years in a permanent state of anxiety and uncertainty, as they were given no official information about the victim's fate, or the location of their body. With the restoration of democracy in these countries, there were campaigns for the truth about the kidnap victims (the desaparecidos) to be revealed. In spite of the various types of amnesty legislation that the military had enacted before relinquishing power to civilians, it was possible to gain much information about the fate of the victims through "truth commissions", and in Argentina some of the most senior of those responsible for the campaign of kidnap, torture and murder have even been brought to trial and convicted.* * *I adj missingII m, desaparecida f1:el desaparecido the deceased2 L.Am.un desaparecido one of the disappeared* * *desaparecido, -da adj1) : late, deceased2) : missingdesaparecido, -da n: missing person* * *desaparecido adj missing -

The festivities are centred round gigantic papier-mâché sculptures (the fallas) which are erected in public squares all over the city. They are constructed over the preceding eleven months by different local groups and normally depict caricatures of politicians and other celebrities of the year. Valencia is renowned for its fireworks, and they are much in evidence during the festival, especially during the famous “mascletá”, in which thousands of fire crackers are exploded with deafening effect. At the end of the final week of festivities prizes are awarded to the best or most original fallas and the figures are then burnt. A small figure (or “ninot”) is preserved from the winning falla, and kept in a special museum.* * *f1 GEOL fault;la falla de San Andrés the San Andreas Fault2 de fabricación flaw3:* * *falla nf1) : flaw, defect2) : (geological) fault3) : fault, failing* * *falla n (en geología) fault -

113 Tourism
Although certain places in Portugal have attracted travelers since the 18th century, mass tourism did not begin until the 1960s. After 1780, English romantics such as Robert Southie, Lord Byron, and other foreign writers put the town of Sintra on the map of romantic places to visit. In the 1920s and 1930s, the town of Estoril, about 32 kilometers (18 miles) west of Lisbon, along the coast, began to be developed as a high-class resort town. During the 1930s, Estoril attracted wealthy Spaniards escaping from the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) and, after World War II, displaced and dethroned ex-royalty from Europe. Tourism was encouraged in the late 1930s, when the Estado Novo began to restore Portuguese castles in connection with the Double Centenary Exposition of the Portuguese World in 1940, an event designed to attract visitors to Portugal. In the 1960s, the Estado Novo began to develop the infrastructure for a mass tourist industry. Hotels and golf courses were built, especially in the Algarve, and a national system of pousadas (government subsidized inns) was established in restored castles and other historic structures.During the 1960s, the number of tourists visiting Portugal reached 6 million per year. Tourists stayed away from Portugal during the turbulent years immediately after the Revolution of 25 April 1974, but returned during the 1980s, and the tourist industry has grown at a phenomenal rate ever since. The number of tourists rose from 7.3 million in 1981-82 to about 18.4 million in 1990. Expo '98, Portugal's worlds fair of 1998, attracted hundreds of thousands of additional visitors, mostly from Europe. -
114 Ferguson, Harry
SUBJECT AREA: Agricultural and food technology[br]b. 4 November 1884 County Down, Irelandd. 25 October 1960 England[br]Irish engineer who developed a tractor hydraulic system for cultivation equipment, and thereby revolutionized tractor design.[br]Ferguson's father was a small farmer who expected his son to help on the farm from an early age. As a result he received little formal education, and on leaving school joined his brother in a backstreet workshop in Belfast repairing motor bikes. By the age of 19 he had built his own bike and began hill-climbing competitions and racing. His successes in these ventures gained useful publicity for the workshop. In 1907 he built his own car and entered it into competitions, and in 1909 became the first person in Britain to build and fly a machine that was heavier than air.On the outbreak of the First World War he was appointed by the Irish Department of Agriculture to supervise the operation and maintenance of all farm tractors. His experiences convinced him that even the Ford tractor and the implements available for it were inadequate for the task, and he began to experiment with his own plough designs. The formation of the Ferguson-Sherman Corporation resulted in the production of thousands of the ploughs he had designed for the Ford tractor, but in 1928 Ford discontinued production of tractors, and Ferguson returned to Ireland. He immediately began to design his own tractor. Six years of development led to the building of a prototype that weighed only 16 cwt (813kg). In 1936 David Brown of Huddersfield, Yorkshire, began production of these tractors for Ferguson, but the partnership was not wholly successful and was dissolved after three years. In 1939 Ferguson and Ford reached their famous "Handshake agreement", in which no formal contract was signed, and the mass production of the Ford Ferguson system tractors began that year. During the next nine years 300,000 tractors and a million implements were produced under this agreement. However, on the death of Henry Ford the company began production, under his son, of their own tractor. Ferguson returned to the UK and negotiated a deal with the Standard Motor Company of Coventry for the production of his tractor. At the same time he took legal action against Ford, which resulted in that company being forced to stop production and to pay damages amounting to US$9.5 million.Aware that his equipment would only operate when set up properly, Ferguson established a training school at Stoneleigh in Warwickshire which was to be a model for other manufacturers. In 1953, by amicable agreement, Ferguson amalgamated with the Massey Harris Company to form Massey Ferguson, and in so doing added harvesting machinery to the range of equipment produced. A year later he disposed of his shares in the new company and turned his attention again to the motor car. Although a number of experimental cars were produced, there were no long-lasting developments from this venture other than a four-wheel-drive system based on hydraulics; this was used by a number of manufacturers on occasional models. Ferguson's death heralded the end of these developments.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsHonorary DSc Queen's University, Belfast, 1948.Further ReadingC.Murray, 1972, Harry Ferguson, Inventor and Pioneer. 116 δισμυριάς
δισμυριάς, άδος, ἡ (so Tdf. S. Vog. M. Bov.) a double myriad (i.e. 20,000) Rv 9:16 (also written separately δὶς μυριάς H.; δύο μυριάδες v.l., but precision would require δισμυριὰς μ., since only one double-myriad of tens of thousands appears to be in view); the undefined pl. suggests several units of twenty-thousand multiplied by 10,000. An indefinite number of incalculable immensity is indicated (as indefinite as the ἀναρίθμητοι μυριάδες of Theopompus in Περὶ ὕψους 43, 2). If the Hb. רִבֹּתַים רִבּוֹת, in which the first part expresses multiplication through the fem. dual form, underlies the Gk. phrase, δισμ. might well be the equivalent of this dual and with similar mng. ten thousand times ten thousand, i.e. ‘a very great number’.
