В последней части фильма на городок обрушивается настоящая чума, разрушающая тела, сознание и души его обитателей. Восхитительная находчивость пастора позволяет завершить рассказ на светлой ноте. Как всегда, Турнёр украдкой подрывает изнутри жанр, в котором работает, нагружает его необычной массой драматичности и тревоги. Еще один способ свернуть с проторенной дорожки и сделать фильм более личным – придание ностальгии отчетливо призрачного характера. Все люди, о которых вспоминает рассказчик, теперь, вероятно, мертвы. Тот городок, что предстает на экране, и все его население существуют только в воспоминаниях, следы которых на экране наполовину реальны, наполовину призрачны, как будто во сне. Еще один типично турнёровский и не столь явный аспект фильма – конфликт между врачом и пастором. На 1-й взгляд это борьба философий: материализм против спиритуализма. На самом же деле у обоих героев есть проблемы с интеграцией в общество, оба в душе – изгнанники, и в этом коренится подлинная причина их столкновения. После эпидемии оба заслужат уважение местных, и между ними завяжется дружба.Этот «маленький», великолепно сделанный фильм по своей природе ― типичный голливудский продукт, но при этом и стопроцентно авторское кино: режиссер идет в нем наперекор обычным установкам жанра и ожиданиям зрителей и делает картину настолько личной, что она приобретает от этого универсальность. Добавим, что автор романа-первоисточника восхищался работой Турнёра. Тем не менее фильм остался малоизвестен; он обращен к избранным зрителям. Это один из любимых фильмов Турнёра.
