11 μάντις
Grammatical information: m. and f.Meaning: `seer, prophet' (Il.); also name of a plant (Nic.), a grasshopper, `praying manti' (Theoc., Dsc.), a garden-frog (H.); as announcing the weather, cf. Strömberg Pflanzennamen 79.Compounds: often as 2. member in the tragics, e.g. ἰατρό-μαντις `soothsayer, who is also a physician' (A.), cf. Risch IF 59, 272f. Rarely as 1. member, e.g. μαντι-πόλος `predicting' (E. in anap., Orac. ap. Luc., Man.).Derivatives: 1. μαντεῖος, -ήϊος `regarding the soothsayer, prophetic' (P., trag.; after βασιλεῖος etc.), μαντεῖον, -ήϊον n. `oracle, place of an oracle' (μ 272). 2. μαντικός `id.', μαντική ( τέχνη) `the art of seeing' (IA.; Chantraine Études 130 a. 143). 3. μαντῳ̃ος `id.' (AP; after ἡρῳ̃ος a. o.). 4. μαντοσύνη `gift of prophecy' (Il., Pi., Emp.; after ἱππο-σύνη etc., Wyss - συνη 24f., Porzig Satzinhalte 226), - συνος `belonging to the seer, oracle' (Corinna, E. in lyr.; Wyss - συνη 42). 5. μαντεύομαι, late also - εύω, `prophesy, predict, ask an oracle' (Il., after βασιλεύειν etc.; cf. Schwyzer 732) with μαντεία, - είη, η-ΐη `prophecy, the gift of prophecy, oracle' (h. Merc.; Zumbach Neuerungen 9), μάντευμα `oracle' (Pi., trag.), μαντευτής = μάντις (Hdt.), - εύτρια (Sch.). - PN Μάντιος (Od.).Etymology: As masc. concretum, esp. as nom. agentis in - τι-, μάντις is rather isolated; similar only μάρπτις `brigand' (A. Supp. 826 f.; text defect), πόρτις `calf'; quite uncertain the PN Σίντιες (Lemnos; σίνομαι?, s. Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 76). It lies at hand, to take it like φάτις as an original abstract fem. (Brugmann; e.g. 4239); on the question Holt Les noms d'action en - σις 40f., G. Liebert Das Nominalsuffix -ti- im Aind. (Lund 1949) 142ff. After Benveniste Origines 83 we should rather reconstruct an old neuter *τὸ μάντι `divination'; but μαντι-πόλος, adduced by B., can easily be explained differently, s. above. In nay case μάντις belongs to μαίνομαι, μανῆναι ( ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ μαίνεται Hdt. 4, 79; rejected by v. Wilamowitz Glaube 1, 40); semantically agrees the formally cognate but differently built Skt. múni- m. `illuminated, seer' (rejected by Mayrhofer KEWA 2, 654); in the West there is a different word for it (Lat. vātēs etc.; Porzig Gliederung 127). The ti-deriv. in Lat. mens etc. is qua content far off.Page in Frisk: 2,172-173Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μάντις

12 ὀμφή 1
ὀμφή 1.Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `voice of a god, devine revelation, oracle, emblem' (Il.), `voice, speech' in gen. (Pi., trag.).Compounds: Few compp., e.g. Όμφο-κλέϜης m. Cyprian in Abydos, εὔ-ομφα ὀνόματα H.; enlarged in παν-ομφ-αῖος `having all ὀμφαι, saying everything', surn. of Zeus (Θ 250, Simon., Orph.), also of Ήέλιος (Q. S.) and Ἥρα (EM), after the σ-stems transformed in παν-ομφ-ής ( ὄνειροι, Orac. ap. Porph.).Derivatives: ὀμφ-αῖος, - ήεις `predicting' (Nonn.), Όμφαίη f. name of a goddess (Emp.), ὀμφητήρ, - ῆρος m. `prognosticator' (Tryph.; after νικη-τήρ: νικάω etc.). Cf. Ruijgh L'élém. ach. 134.Etymology: Archaic, in Greek isolated inherited word (cf. Porzig Satzinhalte 322), which shows cognates only in Germanic. Beside ὀμφ-ή from IE * songʷʰ-ā́ stands e.g. Goth. saggws m. ' song, music, lecture' from IE *sóngʷʰ- o-s (as τομή: τόμος etc.); the basic primary verb is retained only in Germ., e.g. Goth. siggwan ' singen, lecture' IE * sengʷʰ-. Older lit. in Bq and WP. 2, 496; s. also Bechtel Lex. s. v. (The proposed Prakr. cognate is also explained diff. (s. Pok.); then only Germanic remains to show the IE character.Page in Frisk: 2,392-393Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ὀμφή 1

13 σκέπτομαι
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to look around, to look back, to spy, to contemplate, to consider, to survey' (Il; Att. has fo it σκοπέω, - έομαι; s. below)Other forms: Aor. σκέψασθαι (Od.), fut. σκέψομαι, perf. ἔσκεμμαι (IA.), aor. pass. σκεφθῆναι (Hp.), σκεπ-ῆναι w. fut. - ήσομαι (LXX).Derivatives: A. With ε-vowel: 1. σκέψις ( ἐπί-, κατά- σκέπτομαι a.o.) `contemplation, deliberation, examination' (IA.). 2. σκέμ-μα (rarely w. δια- a. o.) `examination, problem' (Hp., Pl. a. o.). 3. σκεπτ-οσύνη f. = σκέψις (Timo, Cerc.). 4. - ήριον n. `test' (Man.). 5. - ικός ( ἐπι-, δια- σκέπτομαι) `cogitating, revising', οἱ σκέπτομαι name of a philos. sect (hell. a. late). B. With ο-ablaut: 1. σκοπός m. (f.) `spy, guard, scout; goal, purpose' (Il.) with hypostases: ἐπί-σκοπος, adv. -α `hitting the goal' (Hdt., trag., late), ἀπό-σκοπος `missing the goal' (Emp.); σκόπ-ιμος `purposive, appropriate' (late; Arbenz 97); as 2. member, e.g. οἰωνο-σκόπος m. `bird-watcher' with - έω, - ία, - ικός, - εῖον (E., hell. a. late). 2. To the prefixcompp.: ἐπί-, κατά-, πρό-σκοπος m. `spy, supervisor, foresighted etc.' (Hom., Pi., IA.). 3. σκοπή ( κατα-, ἐπι- a. o.) f., the spying, watch-tower' (Att. etc.) with σκοπάω (Ar. Fr. 854). 4. σκοπιά, Ion. - ιή f. `mountain-, castle-watching-place, mountain-summit, watch-tower' (ep. Ion. poet. Il., also hell. a. late prose; favoured by the metre, Scheller Oxytonierung 82 f.) with σκοπ-ιήτης m. `summit dweller' = Πάν (Paus.), - ιάζω ( ἀπο-) `to spy, to look out' (ep. Il.), - ιάομαι `to percieve' (Il.; only w. δια-). 5. σκοπέω, - έομαι iterat.-intensive to σκέπτομαι (Pi., IA.), non-pres. forms late: σκοπ-ῆσαι, - ήσασθαι, - ήσω, - ήσομαι, ἐσκόπημαι. 6. σκοπεύω ( κατα-, ἀπο-, ἐπι-), prob. second. for σκοπέω (Schwyzer 732; X., LXX, pap. etc.) with σκόπ-ευσις, - ευτής (Aq.), - εῖα n. pl. (Procl.). -- S. also σκόπελος and σκώψ.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [984] *speḱ- `see sharply, spy'Etymology: As old yot-present σκέπτομαι stands with metathesis (Schwyzer 268) for *σπέκ-ι̯ομαι, which is identical with Lat. speciō, Av. spasyeiti and (except for anl. s-) with Skt. páśyati `see'. The aor. σκέψασθαι too can in the same way be identified with Lat. spexī ; in both cases we have however to do with innovations against the suppletive Skt. ádarśam, 3. pl. ádr̥śan (s. δέρκομαι). Through the iterative-intensive σκοπέω, - έομαι a new opposition was created in Greek to σκέψασθαι etc. in the same way as Skt. pásyati: ádarśam, ὁράω: εἶδον. -- Semant. and phonetic identity is also found in σκοπός and Skt. spaśa- `spy', which is enlarged from spaś- (s. below; Wackernagel-Debrunner II: 2, 90); to this further OWNo. spār `predicting' from PGm. * spaha- (IE *spóḱo-). Thus σκοπή agrees, but for the accent, with OWNo. spā f. `prophesy' from PGm. * spahō (IE *spóḱā). Greek does not have the old root noun Skt. spaś-, Av. spas- `spy', Lat. haru-spex a. o., from which σκέπτομαι etc. prob. arose as denominative. -- Further details w. lit. in WP. 2, 659f., Pok. 984, W.-Hofmann and Ernout-Meillet s. speciō. NGr. forms in Caratzas Glotta 33, 322 ff.Page in Frisk: 2,725-726Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σκέπτομαι
