На самом деле это довольно замшелая и академичная картина, несмотря на все свои изобразительные достоинства. Но в то же время академизм, отсутствие четко выраженной мысли (Третий лишний относится к ряду тех фильмов, которые каждый зритель волен наполнить теми смыслами, какими пожелает) не лишены привлекательности. Притягивает сама пропасть, в которую поочередно обрушиваются возможные пути развития фильма: социальное эссе, философски-религиозная аллегория и т. д. Главный козырь фильма – конечно же игра Джеймса Мейсона, который сам (не вполне справедливо) называл эту роль лучшей в своей карьере. Странной кажется также и связь фильма с легендарным ореолом, окружавшим личность актера: вокруг него сложилась одна из самых богатых мифологий в истории кино. Как правило, ум и воля его персонажей вступают в конфликт с реальностью; чаще всего они терпят поражение, но лишь после яростной, величественной борьбы, приобретающей порой дьявольские масштабы. В Третьем лишнем герой Мейсона, наоборот, пассивен, как будто побежден заранее. Вся фабула фильма демонстрирует его агонию, заставляя вспомнить французские довоенные фильмы и нуар, крайне популярный в годы работы Кэрола Рида. В итоге выходит, что фатальная неизбежность поражения и саморазрушения, характерная для целого ряда персонажей, сыгранных Джеймсом Мейсоном, нигде не была настолько очевидна, настолько подчеркнута, почти до абсурда, неподвижным и повторяющимся контекстом.N.B.
