2) (Naipes) dummyDÍA DE LOS MUERTOS 2 November, All Souls' Day, called the Día de los Muertos elsewhere in the Spanish-speaking world and Día de los Difuntos in Spain, is the day when Christians throughout the Spanish-speaking world traditionally honour their dead. In Mexico the festivities are particularly spectacular with a week-long festival, starting on 1 November, in which Christian and ancient pagan customs are married. 1 November itself is for children who have died, while 2 November is set aside for adults. Families meet to take food, flowers and sweets in the shape of skeletons, coffins and crosses to the graves of their loved ones. In Spain people celebrate the Día de los Difuntos by taking flowers to the cemetery. 20-N N 20-N is commonly used as shorthand to refer to the anniversary of General Franco's death on 20 November 1975. Every year supporters of the far right hold a commemorative rally in Madrid's Plaza de Oriente, the scene of many of Franco's speeches to the people.* * *I- ta adjetivo1) [ESTAR]a) <persona/animal/planta> deadresultaron muertos 30 mineros — 30 miners died o were killed

It is a tea made from the dried leaves of the “yerba maté” plant. Most typically, it is made in, and then drunk from, a receptacle made from the husk of a small gourd, itself called a maté. These can also be made of other materials such as wood, china or bone. The maté is drunk through a type of metal straw with a perforated bulbous end called a “bombilla”. Maté is a stimulant, contains various nutrients, and is held to be good for the digestion. It was drunk by the Guarani Indians long before the Spanish conquest. The conquistadors took to the habit, and also developed it as a commercial crop. Drinking maté is an everyday habit today for the majority of people from all social classes in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, and it is felt by many to be an essential part of being from the River Plate region.* * *I adj mattII m1 en ajedrez mate2 L.Am. * * *Bolívar n pr(Simón) Bolívar (Simon) BolivarBOLÍVARThe greatest of the leaders of Latin America's struggle for independence from Spain, Simon Bolivar was born in Caracas, Venezuela on 24 July 1783. From an early age he was an advocate of independence from Spain, and he propagandized for it on his travels through Latin America, Europe and the United States. Venezuela declared itself independent in 1811 at his prompting, and in 1813 he led a victorious army into Caracas, gaining for himself the title of “Libertador” (“Liberator”). In 1819 he founded the state of Gran Colombia (including modern-day Venezuela, Colombia, Panama and Ecuador), and became its first president. His only rival of equivalent stature was José de San Martin, who freed his native Argentina and helped in the liberation of Chile and Peru. After Bolivar met San Martin in 1822, the Argentinian resigned his position as protector of Peru and went into exile in France. Bolivar's subsequent victory at the battle of Ayacucho in 1824 finally secured independence for Peru and brought an end to Spanish rule in South America. In 1826 he opened the Congress of Panama, which sought to give concrete form to his ideal of a united confederation of Latin American states – an ideal which has been cherished by many Latin Americans since his day. Disillusioned by the failure of his pan-American ideal in practice, he retired from public life in 1830 and died on 17 December of the same year.* * *m bolivar (currency unit of Venezuela)* * *bolívar nm: bolivar (monetary unit of Venezuela) -

54 Generación del 98
A group of Spanish literary figures who wrote in response to the trauma caused to Spain by the loss in 1898 of its last colonies, Cuba, the Philippines and Puerto Rico. Faced with the end of Spain's imperial role, poets, novelists and essayists turned their attention to Spain itself, its landscapes, its people, its linguistic and cultural heritage. The best known members of the group are Antonio Machado, Miguel de Unamuno, Pío Baroja, Jacinto Benavente, Ramón del Valle-Inclán and Azorín.
