Pierre François Gagnon, poète et essayiste québécois, vit dans l’agglomération montréalaise depuis de nombreuses années. Ardent défenseur de la langue française, il est l’un des pionniers de l’internet littéraire francophone. Très tôt, il décide d’utiliser le numérique pour la réception des textes, leur stockage et leur diffusion. En avril 1995, il crée Editel, site pionnier de l’édition littéraire francophone en ligne et premier site web d’auto-édition collective de langue française. Editel devient ensuite un site de "cyberédition" non commerciale (en partenariat avec quelques auteurs maison, notamment Jacques Massacrier et Mostafa Benhamza) ainsi qu’un webzine littéraire. En août 2005, Pierre François Gagnon ouvre son blogue, sous le pseudonyme de Gary Gaignon. -

L’impression à la demande (ou POD: print on demand) est devenue pratique courante grâce aux technologies d’impression numérique développées entre autres par les sociétés Xerox, Océ et IBM, qui permettent d’imprimer un livre en petites quantités. Cette solution est adoptée dès août 1996 par CyLibris, pionnier de l’édition électronique et découvreur de talents. La société Jepublie.com est créée en juin 2003 par Numilog à destination des auteurs qui veulent s’autopublier. Des services similaires sont proposés en 2005 par la plateforme communautaire de l’auto-édition Lulu.com, ou encore par Blurb, Xlibris ou iUniverse. -
