Восточная часть штата занята Аппалачскими горами [ Appalachian Mountains; Great Smoky Mountains] (высшая точка гора Клингменс-Доум [ Clingmans Dome], 2025 м), узкие хребты которых разделены продольными долинами. Ассоциацию Ватога [ Watauga Association] с целью защиты общих интересов и осуществления правосудия. Лидерами этой организации были Дж. Севьер [Sevier, John] и Дж. Робертсон [Robertson, James], в 1779 основавшие поселение на месте современного Нашвилла. Теннессийские поселенцы активно поддержали движение колоний за независимость; волонтеры под командованием Севьера и И. Шелби [ Shelby, Isaac] сыграли решающую роль в победе при Кингс-Маунтин [ King's Mountain, Battle of] (1780), предотвратившей объединение сил англичан. С началом англо-американской войны 1812-14 [ War of 1812] около 28 тыс. теннессийцев приняли участие в боевых действиях, а в сражении при Новом Орлеане [ New Orleans, Battle of] выходцы из этого штата составляли большинство американской армии, при этом особенно прославился фактический победитель сражения Э. В промышленности основная доля приходится на машиностроение, химическую, пищевую и текстильную промышленность, а также производство резины и пластмассы. В 1980-90-е заметное место занимают автомобилестроительные заводы американских и японских фирм. В энергетике главенствующую роль играет Управление ресурсами бассейна Теннесси [ Tennessee Valley Authority]. Основные сельскохозяйственные районы (с преимущественно мелкими фермерскими хозяйствами) расположены в низменности долины Миссисипи, но сельское хозяйство играет незначительную роль в экономике. В Теннесси и поныне сохраняются традиционные различия между промышленным востоком (в политике - бастион республиканцев) и сельским западом (оплот демократов), хотя сейчас эти различия представляются многим скорее преимуществом для развития штата, чем его недостатком.
