  • 30 remuda

(Sp. model spelled same [remúða] < remudar < mudar < Latin matare 'to change')
Clark: 1840s. A herd of domesticated horses on a ranch or trail drive under the charge of a remudero or wrangler. At the beginning of each shift, cowboys would choose their mount from this herd. Horses in this type of herd are said to be in remuda. Watts indicates that since the turn of the century this term has been used on occasion to allude to a cowboy's personal string or even a single horse. Spanish sources provide similar definitions, but none exactly like the southwestern meaning. The DRAE glosses remuda as a change, such as a change of clothing. Santamaría defines it as a relay or draft horse, or a horse or mule that relieves another animal that has become tired from working.
        Alternate form: remouda.

  • 31 wrangler

( caballerango [kaßajeráŋgo] < caballo 'horse' < Latin caballum 'pack horse, nag' plus - ero, an agentive suffix, plus - ango, a despec-tive suffix)
OED: 1888. The hand on a ranch or trail drive who cares for the herd of horses. This position was usually held by a young or inexperienced cowboy. This term appears in English as early as the sixteenth century, but with the very different meaning of 'disputant,' such as for the throne. The OED suggests that the term used in the West is a combination of the English term wrangler and the Spanish caballerango. It is also quite likely that the western term evolved without the influence of the original English term, which cowboys were probably not familiar with. Rather, it is possible that early cowboys heard caballerango and recognized the caballo element. Early variants, caballo rango or even horse rango, would have eventually been shortened to wrango and then wrangler. It is likely that the eventual spelling was influenced by the existing English word. The Royal Academy glosses caballerango as a Mexicanism for a servant on horseback. Santamaría gives a definition more similar to the western meaning. He defines it as the servant who, on a ranch or personal estate, keeps and saddles the horses.
Alternate forms: caverango, horse-wrangler, wangler, wrangatang, wrango.
Also called horse pestler, horse rustler, remudero.
The hand that cares for the remuda, or herd of horses, by day.
The wrangler who works the early morning shift.
A cowboy who cares for horses, leads rides for guests, and perform other chores on a dude ranch.
A boy employed for chores on a ranch.
According to Adams, a common term for a lawyer.

  • 33 cavvy

( caballada [kapajáða]< Spanish caballo 'horse' plus the collective suffix -ada; 'a herd of horses')
       1) Texas: 1821 ( caballada); Southwest Texas: 1937 (cavvy). A band of saddle horses; refers to the mounts owned by a ranch when they are not being ridden. Although Adams indicates that this term refers exclusively to domesticated horses, Watts notes that in literature it has been applied occasionally to a band of wild horses. The DARE indicates that it may have meant a grouping of horses or mules, and Clark says that in rural areas it referred to a group of stray cows, perhaps because some associated the sound of "cavvy" with "calfie." Watts mentions that cavvy and other forms were commonly used to refer to a group of saddle horses on northern ranges in the early days of cattle herding in the West. Remuda was more common in the Southwest and Texas. Later, the variant cavieyah became the standard on northern ranges, while remuda continued to be used on southern ranges. Both the DRAE and Santamaría reference caballada as a herd of horses, both stallions and mares. Although cavvy is considered the most common variant, there are many alternate forms: caavy, cabablada, caballad, caballada, caballado, caballard, caballáda, calf yard, cavalade, cavalgada, caval-lad, cavallada, cavallado, cavallard, cavalry yard, cavalyard, cavayado, cavayard, cavayer, caviada, caviard, caviarde, caviata, caviya, cavoy, cavvayah, cavvayard, cavvie, cavvieyah, cavvieyard, cavvie-yard, cavviyard, cavvieyeh, cavvoy, cavvy yard, cavvyard, cavvy-avvi, cavvyiard, cavy, cavyard, cavyyard, cavy-yard. Some of these alternate forms, such as calf yard, cavalry yard, and other formations that include the term yard are folk etymologies.
       2) By extension from (1) a "ca(a)vy"[sic?] was "a pony or saddle horse used on a round-up," according to Hendrickson.
       3) Hendrickson indicates that the term might also refer to "a stray horse or steer." Neither (2) nor (3) are referenced in Spanish sources, but may represent extensions from the original meaning.

  • 40 madrina

(Sp. model spelled same [madrina] < Latin matrlna 'godmother' < matrem 'mother')
The bell-mare, or the mare that serves as the lead in a herd. The DRAE concurs, although it also lists several unrelated definitions. Santamaría glosses madrina as a tame horse that is tied with another in order to aid in the breaking of the new horse. It also refers to a tame horse on which a rider sits and leads an unbroken horse on which an amansador, or horse-breaker, rides. Islas indicates that the term madrina may refer to the rider of a tame horse or to the team consisting of a horse and its rider.
