25 Sherman’s march to the sea
«Марш Шермана к морю» (1864), поход армии северян под командованием ген. Шермана от Чаттануги через штат Джорджия ( Атланта была взята в сентябре и сожжена дотла) до побережья Атлантического океана. Марш продемонстрировал миру все ужасы войны; одним из афоризмов Шермана было: «Война — это ад» [‘War is hell’]. Его солдаты уничтожали железные дороги, жилые дома, скот, всё, что могло оказаться полезным южанам для продолжения войны. По окончании марша Шерман заявил: «Чтобы понять, что такое война, надо пройти по нашим следам» [‘To realize what war is one should follow in our tracks’]. Северяне праздновали успех похода песней «Маршируя через Джорджию» [‘Marching through Georgia’], южане вспоминают его с горечью.
