1927Graduado en la Escuela de Arte Dramatico de Yale, es profesor de teatro durante algun tiempo, antes de dirigir programas de television. Procedente de ese medio, este mediocre realizador se asoma al cine en 1962 con la pelicula Belle Sommers que, al parecer, no es sino el episodio piloto de una serie de television. A partir de entonces dirige algunas peliculas, entre las que cabe citar dos westerns de poca monta que, sorprendentemente, obtuvieron una repercusion muy por encima de sus meritos. En particular, el primero de ellos, que es tambien la segunda pelicula de Silverstein, gozo del suplemento de prestigio anadido que corresponde a un Oscar de Hollywood, el alcanzado por su actor principal, Lee Marvin.Cat Ballou (La ingenua explosiva). 1965. 96 minutos.
