Те редкие моменты, когда он расходится с версией Джона Брама, и даже его недостатки связаны с одним стремлением: добавить тонкости, интимности и чувственности во взаимоотношения главных героев. Бюджетные ограничения не позволили Фрегонезе столь же тщательно, как Джону Браму, воссоздать знаменитую атмосферу ночного Лондона конца XIX в., что часто встречается в фильмах компании «Fox». По этой причине на 1-й план сразу же выходят персонажи: они, и только они держат внимание зрителя. Фрегонезе наилучшим образом использует внешние данные Пэленса, его повадки крупного, шумно дышащего хищника, одержимого любовью и ненавистью к матери, а также пуританским воспитанием. Его герой оказывает странное влияние на женщин: он и привлекает, и отпугивает их; женщины испытывают к нему смесь жалости, нежности и страха (ничего подобного не было у Брама). Фрейдистская природа внутреннего конфликта гораздо глубже и теснее связывает этого героя с его жертвами. И этого достаточно, чтобы оправдать главное новшество сценария: мать Потрошителя, актриса, постоянными изменами, а затем и уходом из семьи толкнула мужа на запои и медленное самоубийство. Следовательно, расправляясь со всеми женщинами подряд, убийца мстит своей матери (а не любовнице брата); и мать становится первой его жертвой. Отношения между героями Пэленса и Констанс Смит значительно обогащаются. Нежные и пылкие чувства убийцы к актрисе умиротворяют его и заставляют забыть о матери. Особенная природа этих отношений не позволит убийце добавить в мрачный список еще 1 имя. Когда он уже готовится зарезать актрису, нож выпадает из его рук (у Брама же убийцу останавливают только материальные причины: вмешательство полиции, смертельное ранение).
