33 ἀ- (1)
ἀ-Grammatical information: pref.Meaning: privative prefix ( α στερητικόν);Other forms: antevocalic ἀν-.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [757] *n-Etymology: Through the loss of initial consonants (Ϝ-, σ-) the original distribution was disturbed: ἄισος (\< *ἀ-Ϝισος) beside newly made ἄνισος; this led a few times to analogical forms like ἄ-οζος beside original ἄν-οζος. In Myc. aupono \/Ahupnos\/, a proper name, the a- stands before h-; thus class. ἄυπνος. Also before o- the wau was originally retained: ἀόριστος. ἀ(ν)- was in Greek as elsewhere originally limited to verbal adjectives and Bahuvrīhis. Frisk Adj. priv. 4ff., 44ff., Subst. priv. 8ff., Wackernagel Syntax 2, 284ff., 1, 282f., Puhvel Lang. 29, 14ff., Moorhouse Studies Negatives (1959). In other languages e.g. Skt. a(n)-, Lat. in-, Germ., e.g. Goth. un-, PIE *n̥-. The sentence negative was *ne, in Lat. ne-scio, ne-fas etc. (not in νέποδες q.v.). Some formations may be inherited, as ἄν-υδρ-ος = Skt. an-udr-á-, ἄγνωτος = Skt. ájñāta-, Lat. ignotus. If the following word begins with laryngeal + cons., Greek gets νη-, νᾱ-, νω- as in νήγρετος, νωδός \< * n-h₁gr-, * n-h₃d-); these adjectives were again reshaped, as in ἀνώνυμος; Beekes, Lar. Greek. -- Supposed ἀνα- only in ἀνάεδος, ἀνά-ελπτος and ἀνάπνευστος (the last two are analogical, the first may stand for ἀν-εεδν-).Page in Frisk: 1,1Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἀ- (1)

34 ἐλαία
Grammatical information: f.Compounds: Because of the economic value of the oil and the olivetree there are many compounds, esp. since hellen. times. As 1. member ἐλαιο- refers not only to ἔλαιον, but also to ἐλαία, e. g. ἐλαιό-φυτος `planted with olives' (A.). As 2. member in bahuvrihi, e. g. ἄν-ελαιος `without oil, olives' (Thphr., Str.); in determinatives, e. g. ἀγρι-έλαιος = ἄγριος ἔλαιος (Thpr. usw.), χαμ-ελαία `Daphne oleoides' (Nic.), cf. Risch IF 59, 257, Strömberg Pflanzennamen 110; γλυκ-έλαιον `sweet-oil', ὑδρ-έλαιον "wateroil", i. e. `oil mixed with water' (late).Derivatives: ἔλαιον n. `olive-oil, oil in general' (Il.); on the pair ἐλαία (- ος): ἔλαιον, for the tree resp. the product, s. Wackernagel Syntax 2, 17, Schwyzer-Debrunner 30. Substantiva: ἐλᾱΐς f., acc. pl. ἐλᾳ̃δας `olive-trees' (Att.; s. Chantr. Form. 344), diminut. ἐλᾳδιον (- ίδιον) `small olive-tree', also (from ἔλαιον) `a little oil' (Com., pap.); ἐλαιών, - ῶνος m. `thicket of olives' (LXX, pap.), `the olive mountain' (NT, J.), diminut. ἐλαιωνίδιον (pap.); ἐλαιεύς `id.' (Chalkis; s. Boßhardt Die Nom. auf - ευς 21f.). Adj. ἐλαίϊνος, ἐλά̄ϊνος `of olive -wood, belonging to the olive' (Il.), `of olive-oil' (Orph. L. 717); - ίνεος `of olive-wood' (ι 320 and 394; metrically easy contamination of - ινος and - εος, Risch Wortbildung 122, Schmid -εος und -ειος 38); ἐλαϊκός `of olive' (Aristeas, pap.); ἐλαιηρός `regarding oil' (Hp., Pl., pap. ; s. Chantraine 232); ἐλαιώδης `oily' (Hp., Arist.); ἐλαιήεις `belonging to the olive' (S.; on the formation Schwyzer 527). Denomin. verbs: ἐλαΐζω `cultivate olives' with ἐλαιστήρ, - τής `collector of olives' (Poll.) and ἐλαιστήριον `olive-press' (Mylasa); ἐλαιόομαι `be oiled' (Arist.) with ἐλαίωσις (Zos. Alch.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Lat. olīva, from Greek, proves a basic *ἐλαίϜᾱ, with *ἔλαιϜον to Lat. oleum. From Latin all European forms (s. W.-Hofmann 2, 205f.). On itself Arm. ewɫ `oil', which comes together with ἐλαία, ἔλαιον from a Mediterranaean source (Crete?, s. W.-Hofmann s. v.). See Bq. - The word is no doubt a Pre-Greek word.Page in Frisk: 1,480Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἐλαία

36 κύριος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `lord, ruler, possessor', adj. (m. f. n.) `ruling, deciding, entitled to, decided' (posthom.), f. κυρία `(lady) who rules' (hell.).Derivatives: κυρία (from κυρι-ία; cf. κυρεία from κυριεύω below) f. `rule, possession' (Arist., hell.), κυριότης f. `lordship, rule' (christ. lit.); κυριακός `belonging to the lord (= Christ), to the emperor' (Empire); κυριεύω `be, become lord, possess, get power' (X., Arist.) with κυριεία, κυρεία (Schwyzer 194) `possession, proprietary rights' (hell.), κυριευτικός, Adv. - κῶς `regarding the prop. rights' (pap.). - κυρωθῆναι, act. κυρῶσαι, κυρόω `become, make rightful' (IA.) with κύρωσις `ratification' (Th., Pl.), κυρωτής `who ratifies' (Att. inscr.); backformation κῦρος n. `authority, confirmation' (IA.) - ἄκῡρος `without authority, unvalid' (Att.) with ἀκυρόω `make unvalid' (Din., hell.), from where ἀκύρωσις, - ωτος with - ωσία (late).Origin: IE [Indo-European] [592] *ḱeuh₂- `swell, strong'Etymology: Like e.g. ἄν-υδρ-ος `without water' is based on ὕδωρ, ἄ-κῡρ-ος `without authority' supposes an r-stem, which is also seen in κύρ-ιος. Beside κύρ-ιος there may have been an ο-deriv. *κῦρ-ος, which would agree with Skt. śū́ra-, Av. sūra- `hero'; cf. the Skt. words for `sun', sū́r-ya- and sū́r-a- from súvar- n. (old l-stem, s. on ἥλιος). Cf. Schwyzer 727 n. 2; slightly different Wackernagel Syntax 2, 61 n. 1. From *κῦρος m. perhaps also κυρωθῆναι, κυρόω; but κυρ-ωθῆναι can be derived directly from the r-stem ( ἀνδρ-ωθῆναι: ἀνήρ). A trace of this r-stem shows ἔγ-κυαρ `pregnant' (Milet, VIa), from *κύαρ `foetus' (Kretschmer Glotta 8, 250). Other derivations: Skt. śávīra- `strong, powerful' (*ḱeuh₂-ro-), Celt., e.g. Gaul. Καυαρος, Welsh cawr `giant'; (uncertain Κυάρη ἡ Άθηνᾶ H.) - Further s. on κυέω.Page in Frisk: 2,53-54Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κύριος

37 λείπω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `let, leave, leave behind', intr. `to be wanting, disappear', midd. `depart'.(Il.)Other forms: λιμπάνω (Sapph., Hp., Th., v. l. Λ 604), fut. λείψω, aor. 2 λιπεῖν, perf. λέλοιπα (alle Il.), midd. λέλειμμαι (Il.), aor. pass. λειφθῆναι (h. Merc., Pi.), aor. 1 λεῖψαι (Ar.),Compounds: often with prefix, e. g. ἀπο-, ἐκ-, ἐν-, κατα-, ὑπο-, As 1. member in mehreren governing compp., partly with privative meaning, e. g. λιπό-τεκνος `childless' (Pi.), s. Schwyzer 442; on the stemformation see Sommer Nominalkomp. 124 f.; also with inversion of the members as σαρκο-λιπής (AP) for λιπό-σαρκος (Hp.). Besides note λειψ(ι)- in λειψ-υδρ-ία `dirt of water' (Thphr.) etc.Derivatives: Subst.: 1. λεῖμμα ( ὑπό-, κατά-, ἔλ- λείπω etc.) `rest' (IA., Arist.). 2. λεῖψις ( ἔκ-, ἀπό- λείπω etc.) `leaving, be absent' (IA.). 3. λείψανον, most pl. -α `remainder' (E., Ar., Pl. 4. ἐκλειπ-ία `lack' (J.; cf. ἐκλιπ-ής below). - Adj.: 5. λοιπός (also ὑπό-, κατά- λείπω a. o. from ὑπο-λείπω etc.) `remaining' (posthom.) with ( ὑπο)λοιπ-άς f. `rest' (pap.), ἀπολοιπ-ασία `id.' (Hero, pap.; *ἀπολοιπ-άζω: ἀπόλοιπ-ος; Chantraine Form. 85, Schwyzer 469). 6. ἐκ-, ἐν-, ὑπο-λιπ-ής etc. (v. l. - λειπής) `lacking, remaining etc.' (Att.). 7. ἐκ-, ἐν-, παρα-, ὑπο-λειπτικός `regarding the ἔκλειψις' (hell.). - On its own is λίσσωμεν ἐάσωμεν H.; the explanation is dubious, cf. Schwyzer 692.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [669] `let, leave behind'Etymology: The thematic root aorist ἔ-λιπ-ε has exact parallels in Arm. e-lik', Skt. á-ric-a-t, IE *é-likʷ-e-t `he left'. With λέ-λοιπ-α agrees except the accent and the reduplication vowel Skt. ri-réc-a; without reduplication Germ., e.g. Goth. laiƕ, Lat. līqu-ī, IE *- loikʷ-. The nasalpresent λι-μ-π-άν-ω resembles best Arm. lk`-an-em (IE * likʷ-); nasalpresents of diff. formation are found also elsewhere, e. g. Skt. (3. sg.) ri-ṇá-k-ti, Lat. li-n-qu-ó. With the thematic root present λείπω agree Germ., e. g. Goth. leiƕan, OHG līhan `loan' (PGm. *līhu̯-) and Lith. liekù `let'; the last stands for older athemat. liek-mì. The Germ. present may go back on a nasalized *liŋhu̯-, which would agree with Lat. linquō. Note λοιπός beside the subst. Skt. ati-reka- m., Lith. ãt-laikas, OCS otъ-lěkъ `remainder' (IE *- loikʷ-o-); cf. Porzig Satzinhalte 304, Gliederung 167. - Further details WP. 2, 396f., Pok. 669f., W.-Hofmann s. linquō, Fraenkel s. lìkti.Page in Frisk: 2,99-100Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > λείπω

μώλωψ, - ωποςGrammatical information: m.Meaning: `stripe, wale, weal, bruise' (Hyp., Arist., LXX, medic.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Formation like 1. μύ-ωψ, ὕδρ-ωψ a.o.
