Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `winnow' (Pherekr.), but see the glosses.Other forms: aor. ἧναι Further ἀ̄νέω (Ar. Fr. 694 (uncertain), Ath.), ἀφᾱνέω Ar. Eq. 394 (v.1.), ἄφηνα ἔκοψα, ἀφῆναι τὸ τὰς ἐπτισμένας κριθὰς χερσὶ τρῖψαι H.; further αἵνων· πτίσσων, ἥνας κόψας and γάναι (= Ϝᾶναι) περιπτίσαι (cod. - πτύσαι; s. Solmsen Unt. 280).Origin: XX [etym. unknown] [82]Etymology: PN Ἄνιος, Fick KZ 42, 146f.; Bechtel KZ 46, 374 compares the name of a phratry Ϝανίδαι (Argos); both quite uncertain. - One compared Lat. vannus `Futterschwinge'; and OHG wintōn `fan', Goth. dis-winÞjan `λικμᾶν'. The Germ. words seem to derive from the word for `wind' (cf. Lat. ventilare `fan', but αἵνω has no trace of the -t-. Derivation of the Greek word from * h₂weh₁- seems excluded by γάναι, which has no vowel before the F. ἀ̄νέω has been explained from *ἀ-Ϝαν-έω (Solmsen Unt. 272), which would imply a non-IE word (which is quite possible; or can we assume *h₂u̯n̥H- \> *αϜαν- ?). Note that the exact meaning of the word in unclear.Page in Frisk: 1,41Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > αἵνω

Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `level', of bottom a. o., `smooth', of urfaces etc. (Il.), also `rubbed, well-ground' (Delos, pap., Dsc.; cf. λε(ι)αίνω, - όω below); adv. λείως, also λέως (after τελέως, ἡδέως a. o., cf. also λε(ι)αίνω below), also metaph. `completely, quite ' (IA.; cf. Lat. plānē, NHG glatt).Compounds: Often as 1. member, e. g. λειό-φλοιος `with smooth bark' (Thphr.), also with adverbial value (with - ω- after λε(ί)-ως), e. g. λειώλης = πανώλης (Rhodos VIa), λεω-κόνιτος, - κόρητος `changed in fine dust' resp. `swept smooth', i. e. `completely destroyed' (Theognost., H., Phot.), λεω-πάτητος `completely trodden (down)' (S. Chantraine Glotta 33, 25 ff. w. extensive treatment and many details; on λεῖος etc. also Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 89 n. 1.Derivatives: λειότης f. `smoothness' (Att.), λείαξ `beardless boy' (EM, H.); two denomin.: λε(ι)αίνω (on the phonetics Schwyzer 236, Lejeune Traité de phon. 216), also with ἐκ-, συν-, ἀπο-etc., `(make) smooth, ground' (Il.) with λε(ί)αν-σις, - τήρ, - τικός, ἐκλεα-σμός a.o. (Arist.); λειόω, also συν-, ἀπο- a. o., `id.' (Arist.) with λείω-μα `powder' (Thphr.); - σις `grinding' (Gal.).Etymology: Beside the o-stem in *λεῖϜος Latin has in lēvis `smooth' an i-stem, which may have replaced as lĕvis, brevis a. o. an older u-stem; *λεῖϜος too therefore first for *lei-u̯-os? The stemvowel is uncertain; beside lei- also lēi- has been supposed, cf. πλε(ί)ων \< *πληΐων and Schulze KZ 28, 266 n. 1 = Kl. Schr. 434 n 1; cf. W. -Hofmann s. 2. lēvis. (Bechtel, Namenst. 6 f.); on ἀμενηνός s. v.; PN like Κλεο-μένης; as 1. member in μενο-εικής `suited to the desired, agreeable, richly' (Hom.).Derivatives: To μένος belong two verbs with remarkable formation: 1. μενεαίνω, - ῆναι `desire strongly, rage' (Il.); prob. with analog. - αίνω from uncontracted μένε-ος etc. (Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 54 n. 2 a. 2, 211, Schwyzer 440; cf. κτερε-ΐζω, μελε-ϊστί); diff. R., AP; prob. backformation); origin unclear; quite uncertain hypothesis by Solmsen Wortforsch. 51 f. (from *μενώ f.; cf. Μενοίτης, - οίτιος, which however certainly belongs to οἶτος `fate'); not better Brugmann IF 29, 237f., 12, 152, Wiedemann BB 28, 51, Specht Ursprung 167.Etymology: As old verbal noun identical with Skt. mánas- n., Av. manah- n. `pirit, thought, will', IE *ménos n.; here OP Haxā-maniš m. PN prop. "who has the mind of a friend", `friendly minded' (Gr. Άχαιμένης; s. v.). Adj. δυσ-μενής = Av. duš-manah- `evilminded', Skt. dur-manas- `sorrowful'; εὑ-μενής: Skt. su-mánas- `wellminded'. Verbal subst.: ὀλίσθ-ημα n. `fall, sprain' (Hp., Pl.), - ησις (also ἀπ-, κατ-, περι-) f. `slipping, spraining' (medic., Plu.); on the meaning-difference between ὀλίσθ-ημα and - ησις Holt Les noms d'action en - σις 138; backformation ὄλισθος m. `lubricity' (Hp., hell.), also name of a slippery fish (Opp.; Strömberg Fischnamen 28). 2. Verbal adj.: ὀλισθ-ηρός `slippery,' (Pi., IA), - ήεις `id.' (AP; poet. formation cf. Schwyzer 527), - ανωτέρα `id.' (nom. f. sg.; Gal,; rather from ὀλισθάνω than with Thumb IF 14, 346 f. from ὄλισθος), ὀλισθός `id.' (Hdn. Gr. 1, 147; prob. first to ὄλισθος w. accentshift), - ητικός `making slippery' (Hp.). -- On its own stands ὀλισθράζω = ὀλισθάνω (Epich., Hp. ap. Gal. 19, 126) as if from *ὄλισθρος, cf. ὀλιβ(ρ)άξαι from ὀλιβρός (s.v.).Etymology: The themat. root-aorist ὀλισθεῖν, from which all other forms derive, direct or indirectly, and whose function as aorist was perh. connected with the rise of the present in - άνω (to which later - αίνω; Schwyzer 748 with Brugmann Grundr.2 II: 3, 365), recalls - δαρθεῖν (: δαρ-θάνω), αἰσθέσθαι (: αἰσθάνομαι) and can like this contain an enlarging IE dh-element with Gr. σθ from dh-dh. As source of σθ however, also IE dh-t can be considered, with βλαστεῖν (: βλαστάνω), ἁμαρτεῖν (: ἁμαρτάνω) as parallel (Schwyzer 703f.). -- Orig.. *ὀλιθ-, with prothet. ὀ- can well be sompared with a verb for `glide, shove' in Germ. and Balt., e.g. OE slīdan (NEngl. slide), MHG slīten, Lith. slýs-ti, pret. slýd-au (with second. y beside slidùs `smooth, slippery'). Here further isolated nouns in Slav. and Celt.: OCS slědъ, Russ. sled m. `trace' (IE * sloidh-o-), NIr. slaod `gliding mass' (formation unclear). Also the not certainly interpreted Skt. srédhati about `stumble, make a mistake' may belong here. When we analyse as sli-dh- (cf. Benveniste Origines 192) also ὀλιβρόν etc. may be connected, s. v. From *περκός also περκ-άζω, - αίνω, - όομαι (like λευκ-αίνω a.o.). Beside it with ν-suffix περκ-νός like the synonymous ἐρεμ-νός, κελαι-νός a.o.
