Уленшпигель Тиль (род. ок. 1300-1350), герой народных шванков, реальное лицо или собирательный образ шута. За его наивностью и кажущейся недалёкостью скрывается присущий народному характеру здравый смысл, хитрость и находчивость, побеждающие несправедливость. Первая печатная книга о проделках Уленшпигеля вышла в 1515 г. в Страсбурге на основе нижненемецкого текста двух брауншвайгских граждан, собравших в конце XV в. устные истории о нём. В ряде городов Германии установлены фонтаны и памятники в честь Уленшпигеля (в Кнайтлингене, Мёльне, Брауншвайге и др.). На одном из фонтанов он изображён с совой и зеркалом, согласно народной этимологии его имени: Eule ("сова") + Spiegel ("зеркало") <Ulensp(i)egel – имя, производное от глагола "ulen" – букв.
