Купец засыпает. Наутро он срывает в саду цветок для Красавицы, чем ужасно злит хозяина замка - жутковатое создание в роскошных одеждах (его заросшая шерстью голова напоминает львиную гриву). В обмен на розу Чудовище (так зовется хозяин) требует жизнь купца или той его дочери, что согласится его заменить. Купец получает лошадь, на которой сможет вернуться домой, а вместе с ней - волшебное заклинание, чтобы эта лошадь перенесла его, куда он пожелает.Оказавшись дома, купец рассказывает о своих приключениях. Красавица тут же садится на лошадь, произносит заклинание и отправляется в добровольный плен. Едва увидев Чудовище, она теряет сознание. Чудовище берет ее на руки и относит в приготовленную комнату. Чудовище говорит, что будет докучать ей только раз в сутки - задавать один вопрос: «Будете ли вы моей женой?» Красавица каждый раз отвечает отказом. Но со временем, наблюдая за жизнью Чудовища, она привыкает и даже привязывается к нему. Увидев в волшебном зеркале, что ее отец при смерти, она умоляет Чудовище отпустить ее. Чудовище дает ей неделю и добавляет, что умрет, если она не вернется. В знак своего доверия (а также, чтобы обязать девушку вернуться) Чудовище дает Красавице ключ от флигеля, где хранятся его несметные богатства.Красавица приезжает к отцу, и в дом чудесным образом возвращается мебель, конфискованная судебным приставом за карточные долги Людовика. Она всегда внушает надежду и благодарность за красоту мира. Действие разворачивается в особом сказочном измерении, за рамками реального времени и любых исторических эпох. Такие условия идеально подходят Кокто: воображаемый им XVII в. создан исключительно его руками и воображением. Фильм не смешивает в себе различные эпохи. Он создает собственную.В отличие от того, что произойдет позднее в Орфее, Orphée, непроницаемость реальности не становится преградой для взгляда режиссера. Она, если можно так выразиться, исчезает. Ко всему прочему, Кокто не забывает, что он как поэт превосходно владеет словом. Диалоги, от которых он добивался лаконичности, лапидарности и осмысленности, еще более возвеличиваются голосом и манерой речи Жана Марэ. «Голос калеки, страдающего монстра», как написал Кокто в дневнике фильма. При чтении книги фильм предстает своеобразным приключением, духовным переживанием и сложным, но логичным следствием внутренних археологических раскопок. «Моя работа сродни работе археолога. Между прочим, немногие режиссеры сохраняли такую трезвость, оценки фильма во время работы над ним и после ее окончания: «Теперь, глядя со стороны, я понимаю, что ритм моего фильма - ритм рассказа. Он оставляет текст пьесы практически в полном объеме, лишь слегка сокращает несколько реплик. Это решение великолепно подходит мрачному и удушливому замкнутому пространству, где 5 персонажей рвут друг друга на части. Кинематограф здесь используется как безжалостный микроскоп, что рыщет по декорациям в той же степени (если не в большей), что и по актерам, поскольку декорация, несомненно, главный персонаж этой драмы. Она заснята со всех возможных и воображаемых ракурсов, как будто зритель обыскивает комнату, заглядывая во все тайные уголки.Кроме того, кинематограф позволяет Кокто обессмертить великолепный состав исполнителей, и в 1-ю очередь – игру Ивонн де Брэ, вдохновительницы пьесы, ей же и посвященной (из-за болезни де Брэ не смогла сыграть эту роль на сцене в 1938 г.). Кокто писал о де Брэ: «Достаточно было оставить ее наедине с худшим инструментом любопытства – кинокамерой… Не важно, что она смотрела в объектив; не важно, что ее рука пролетала на 1-м плане, словно птица. Главное было – ухватить живым ее ребяческий взгляд, ее чудесный низкий голос, чуть хрипящий, мягкий, грубый, из бархата и металла» (в журнале «L'Ecran français» от 9 ноября 1948 г., перепечатано в «Du cinématographe», Pierre Belfond, 1973). Страдания приводят их то к безумной страсти (Мишель и Мадлен), то к поискам правды и ясности сознания (Жорж и Леони), а то и к трагедии и смерти (Ивонн). Наконец, не сыскать более мобильной драматургической структуры, чем этот «фургончик» и его добровольные пленники, никогда не видящие дневного света.Картина весьма показательна в плане глубокой двойственности стиля Кокто: с одной стороны – влажная и лихорадочная возбужденность, бесстыдная близость к коже, вывернутое наружу нутро персонажей со столь заплутавшими душами; с другой – совершенно классическая отстраненность и сдержанность, придающие этой современной драме вневременный характер греческой трагедии. Кокто предстает в этой картине художником с барочным темпераментом, который при этом держит курс в сторону классицизма.
