Здесь же, напротив, несмотря на некоторую неуклюжесть постановки и скудость бюджета, поражает достоверность информации, предоставляемой фильмом, и относительная зрелость подачи материала и его использования в конструкции сценария. Оставаясь прежде всего приключенческой картиной, фильм, тем не менее, опирается на довольно разнообразный костяк персонажей, и каждый по-своему относится к фашизму. Купец узнает, что его корабль, о котором давно не было никаких известий, вернулся в порт. Он должен туда отправиться. Фелиция и Аделаида просят его привезти им целую гору подарков. Красавица не просит ничего, кроме розы. Товара уцелело так мало, что остатков не хватает даже на оплату долгов купца. На обратной дороге ночью купец сбивается с пути в лесу и попадает в загадочный замок, где в коридорах прямо из стен торчат руки с канделябрами, освещающими путь, а стол без единой просьбы сам собой накрывается для ужина. Купец засыпает. Наутро он срывает в саду цветок для Красавицы, чем ужасно злит хозяина замка - жутковатое создание в роскошных одеждах (его заросшая шерстью голова напоминает львиную гриву). В обмен на розу Чудовище (так зовется хозяин) требует жизнь купца или той его дочери, что согласится его заменить. Купец получает лошадь, на которой сможет вернуться домой, а вместе с ней - волшебное заклинание, чтобы эта лошадь перенесла его, куда он пожелает.Оказавшись дома, купец рассказывает о своих приключениях. Красавица тут же садится на лошадь, произносит заклинание и отправляется в добровольный плен. Едва увидев Чудовище, она теряет сознание. Чудовище берет ее на руки и относит в приготовленную комнату. Чудовище говорит, что будет докучать ей только раз в сутки - задавать один вопрос: «Будете ли вы моей женой?» Красавица каждый раз отвечает отказом. Но со временем, наблюдая за жизнью Чудовища, она привыкает и даже привязывается к нему. Увидев в волшебном зеркале, что ее отец при смерти, она умоляет Чудовище отпустить ее. Чудовище дает ей неделю и добавляет, что умрет, если она не вернется. В знак своего доверия (а также, чтобы обязать девушку вернуться) Чудовище дает Красавице ключ от флигеля, где хранятся его несметные богатства.Красавица приезжает к отцу, и в дом чудесным образом возвращается мебель, конфискованная судебным приставом за карточные долги Людовика. Что послужило причиной огромного успеха этого фильма? Прежде всего то, что знаменитый писатель, художник и на все руки мастер, каким был Кокто, обожал процесс работы в самом конкретном смысле слова. Ему нравилось чувствовать товарищеский дух съемочной группы, своими руками создавать спецэффекты; нравилось все, что представляет собой кинопроизводство, которое он называл «прибежищем ремесленника». «Я всегда люблю то, что делаю, - говорил он. - Но для такого человека, как я, предрасположенного к грусти, нет ничего лучше студийной работы. Она всегда внушает надежду и благодарность за красоту мира. Действие разворачивается в особом сказочном измерении, за рамками реального времени и любых исторических эпох. Такие условия идеально подходят Кокто: воображаемый им XVII в. создан исключительно его руками и воображением. Фильм не смешивает в себе различные эпохи. Он создает собственную.В отличие от того, что произойдет позднее в Орфее, Orphée, непроницаемость реальности не становится преградой для взгляда режиссера. Она, если можно так выразиться, исчезает. Ко всему прочему, Кокто не забывает, что он как поэт превосходно владеет словом. Кокто описывает также всевозможные болезни (карбункул, экзема), одолевавшие его в это время и вынудившие его сделать перерыв в съемках (Марэ тоже был болен, а Мила Парели попала в аварию). При чтении книги фильм предстает своеобразным приключением, духовным переживанием и сложным, но логичным следствием внутренних археологических раскопок. «Моя работа сродни работе археолога. Фильм уже существует (заранее). Я должен лишь найти его во мраке, где он дремлет, пробиться заступом и киркой. Бывает, что я наношу ему повреждения в спешке. Но неповрежденные участки сияют белизной мрамора». Между прочим, немногие режиссеры сохраняли такую трезвость, оценки фильма во время работы над ним и после ее окончания: «Теперь, глядя со стороны, я понимаю, что ритм моего фильма - ритм рассказа. Я рассказываю. Кажется, будто я спрятался за экраном и говорю оттуда: итак, произошло то-то и то-то. Нельзя сказать, что персонажи живут: они проживают рассказанную жизнь». Сценарий и диалоги фильма опубликованы в Америке в двуязычном издании (Robert М. Hammond. New York, 1970). Это режиссерский сценарий, где тщательно отмечены все изменения, привнесенные в окончательный фильм. Хэммонд впервые подтверждает существование целого ряда сцен (вырезанных во Франции), о которых упоминает Кокто в дневнике. В этих сценах мы видим, как Людовик и Авенан переодеваются в женские платья и выдают себя за Фелицию и Аделаиду, чтобы выманить деньги у суконщика.
