The Icel. distinguishes between the strong neut. and originally redupl. verb búa, and the transit. and weak byggja, q. v.: búa seems to be kindred to Gr. φύω, εφυσα (cp. Sansk. bhû, bhavâmi, Lat. fui); byggja to Lat. făcio, cp. Swed.-Dan. bygga, Scot. and North. E. to ‘big,’ i. e. to build; cp. Lat. aedificare, nidificare: again, the coincidence in sense with the Gr. οικος, οικειν, Lat. vicus, is no less striking, cp. the references s. v. bú above. Búa, as a root word, is one of the most interesting words in the Scandin. tongues; bú, bær, bygg, bygð, byggja, etc., all belong to this family: it survives in the North. Skt. yācchrē[snull ][tnull ]á[hudot ] 'the best possible': (2) ὧς ' thus' is the Adv. of a Demonstr. stem so- found in Skt. sa, Gr. ὁ, Lat. sō-c (Gloss. = ita, cf. Umbr. esoc); (3) ὡς postpositive (ὄρνιθες ὥς, etc.) constantly makes a preceding short closed syll. long in Hom., and must therefore have been ϝως; it may perh. be related to Skt. vā, a form of va, iva ( = (1) or (2) like), Lat. ve, Gr. ἦ[ϝ] ε; (4) ὡς prep. 'to' is of doubtful origin (perh. fr. Ως, cogn. with Lat. ōs 'face', Skt. ās: Ως τινα ἐλθεῖν like τί δέ δε φρένας ἵκετο πένθος;); (5) ὡς F.3 is prob. ϝως, Adv. of ϝός the reflexive Adj., and means lit. in his (their) own way (or place); it is idiomatically placed before ἕκαστος ([etym.] ἑκάτερος), cf.ϝὸν ϝεκάτερος Leg.Gort.1.18

2.SM / F LAm (Pol) missing personLOS DESAPARECIDOS Los desaparecidos is the name given to those who disappeared during the military dictatorships in the Southern Cone in the 1970s. Thousands of people were taken from their homes, schools and places of work and never seen again. Few of "the disappeared" were ever found alive, although a certain number of bodies were recovered in mass graves. Families of the victims joined forces to form pressure groups like Argentina's Madres y Abuelas de la Plaza de Mayo, but although some managed to identify and recover the bodies of their relatives, the perpetrators were rarely brought to justice.número de muertos, heridos y desaparecidos — number of dead, wounded and missing

[en catástrofe] missing person;ha habido veinte muertos y tres desaparecidos twenty people have been killed and three are missing2. [en represión política] missing person [kidnapped and possibly murdered by the authorities]DESAPARECIDOSThe kidnap of alleged subversives and holding of them in undisclosed locations became a widespread repressive technique in many Latin American countries from the 1960s onwards, and is especially associated with the period of the “guerra sucia” (dirty war) in Argentina, Uruguay and Chile in the 1970s. Those kidnapped, whether by the military, secret police or paramilitary groups, were usually tortured and many were killed. The bodies were disposed of in secret, and in some cases they were dropped from planes over the open sea. Surviving friends and relatives lived for years in a permanent state of anxiety and uncertainty, as they were given no official information about the victim's fate, or the location of their body. With the restoration of democracy in these countries, there were campaigns for the truth about the kidnap victims (the desaparecidos) to be revealed. In spite of the various types of amnesty legislation that the military had enacted before relinquishing power to civilians, it was possible to gain much information about the fate of the victims through "truth commissions", and in Argentina some of the most senior of those responsible for the campaign of kidnap, torture and murder have even been brought to trial and convicted.* * *I adj missingII m, desaparecida f1:el desaparecido the deceased2 L.Am.un desaparecido one of the disappeared* * *desaparecido, -da adj1) : late, deceased2) : missingdesaparecido, -da n: missing person* * *desaparecido adj missing
