49 ἀθᾰρη
ἀθᾰ́ρηGrammatical information: f.Meaning: `gruel, porridge' (Ar.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Unexplained; according to Pliny, N. H. 22, 121, Egyptian. The final -η in Attic, confirmed by Moeris, would lead to *ἀθαρϜᾱ. Connection with ἀθήρ neither formally nor semantically possible. Egyptian; substr.? Not to Lat. ador (Hamp TPS 1968, 106) as this belongs to Goth. atisk and Iran. ādu `grain' (Szemerényi Studi Pisani 1969, 968f.).Page in Frisk: 1,27Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἀθᾰρη

50 αἴγειρος
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `black poplar' (Il.).Other forms: αἴγερος Com. Adesp. 1276 (Kock).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Connection with αἰγίλωψ, αἰγανέη is uncertain. Sommer IF 55, 260, pointing to the many non-IE words like αἴγιθος and names with Αἰγ- ( Αἴγινα, Αἰγαί etc.) suggested pre-Greek origin. This would be confirmed by the form with - ε-.Page in Frisk: 1,30-31Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > αἴγειρος

51 ἀλίνειν
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: (cod. - νεῖν) ἀλείφειν H. ἀλῖναι ἐπαλεῖψαι H. ἰν-αλαλισμένα `engraved' (Cyprus). καταλῖναι. καταλεῖψαι H. is now confirmed by an inscr. from Selinous, RPh 69, 1995, 128, l. 16.Derivatives: Verbal noun ἄλινσις τοῠ ἐργαστηρίου (Epid.).Etymology: ἀλίνω prob. \< *ἀλιν-ι̯ω will be cognate with Lat. lĭno `besmear, rub', orig. an n-present (perf. lēvi)?; root ἀλι- \< * h₂li-. One would like to reconstruct * h₂li-n-H-, but Lat. litus has short i (after linō? LIV 247f.). 52 ἀμιχθαλόεσσα
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: `rich in almonds', epithet of Lemnos (Ω 753)Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Call. Fr. 18, 8 has ἀμιχθαλόεσσαν... ἠέρα, so he connects ὀμίχλη, which is quite impossible (e.g. ὀ- represents * h₃-). Scholion BT on Ω 753 gives = εὑδαίμων, which is no more than a non-committal guess (Lagercrantz IF 50, 1932, 277-80 *ἀμικτο-θαλοεσσα, a construct that would hardly have been syncopated to our form). The ancient interpretation ἀπρόσμικτος `inhospitable' does not explain the form of the word. The connection with Goth. maihstus `mist' has the objection that the word is not known in Greek. Discussion in Leumann Hom. Wörter 214 A. 8, and 273, who accepts the solution of Doederlein, which identifies the form with ἀμύγδαλον `almond'. This explanation fits well and gives no difficulties for the formation. The variation may be confirmed by ἄμυκτο γλυκύ οἱ δε ἄμικτον H. (and ἀμυκλίς γλυκύς, ἡδύς H.; for κτ\/κλ cf. ἀράκτη \/ ἄροκλον etc.). See Fur. 140, 388.Page in Frisk: 1,93Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἀμιχθαλόεσσα

53 ἀμολγός
Grammatical information: m., (adj.)Meaning: `darkness'. Only (ἐν) νυκτὸς ἀμολγῳ̃ (Il. Λ 173, Ο 324, Χ 28, 317, 4 841). As adj. (prob. a secondary, learned development), E. Fr. 104 ἀμολγὸν νύκτα Εὑριπίδης Άλκμήνῃ ζοφερὰν καὶ σκοτεινήν. οἱ δε μέρος τῆς νυκτὸς καθ' ὅ ἀμέλγουσιν.Other forms: ὀμολγῳ̃ ζόφῳ Η. (ms. ὁμολογῶ)Derivatives: ἀμολγαῖος: μάζα ἀμολγαίη Hes. Op. 590 (s. below), ἀμολγαῖον μαστὸν ἀνασχόμενος AP 7, 657 (Leon.). ἀμολγάζει μεσημβρίζει H.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: The meaning was already lost in antiquity. If a verbal noun of ἀμέλγω, ἀμολγός is `the milking' (oxytonesis then secondary). The expression μάζα ἀμολγαίη in Hesiod is interpreted by Proklos and in EM s. μάζα as ἀκμαία: τὸ γὰρ ἀμολγὸν ἐπὶ τοῦ ἀκμαίου τίθεται. Thus also Eustathios on Ο 324: Άχαιοὶ δε κατὰ τοὺς γλωσσογράφους ἀμολγὸν την ἀκμήν φασι. But this meaning may have been derived from the text (Leumann Hom. Wörter 274). Nilsson Primitive Timereckoning 35f. took it as the time of milking at the beginning of the night. DELG thinks this interpretation more probable than that as `fullness'. Extensive lit. in DELG and Frisk III, e.g. Kretschmer Glotta 22, 262f.; 11, 108; 13, 166f.; Wahrmann Glotta 13, 98ff.; Leumann Hom. Wörter 164; Bolling AJPh. 78, 1958, 165-172; Szemerényi, Gnomon 43, 1971, 654. In my view (ε.) ν. α. simply means `in the darkness of the night', in Λ and Ο of beasts of prey attacking `in (the protection of) the darkness of the night', in Χ of stars being visible in the darkness. The latter excludes an indication of time, and shows that it must be a clear night, so that a connection with `milk(ing)' is excluded. It may be confirmed by the glosses ζόφῳ and ζοφερὰν καὶ σκοτεινήν. - If ὁμολογω point to *ὀμολγός, and if the ὀ- is not simply due to assimilation, the alternation ἀ\/ὀ- would point to a substr. word.Page in Frisk: 1,94Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἀμολγός

54 ἀμυγδάλη
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `almond' (Hp.)Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: A typical substr. word (note - γδ- which interchanges with - σγ-), which is confirmed by the identification with ἀμιχθαλόεσσα etc. (s.v.); on the interchange see Beekes Pre-Gr. Fur. 140 further compares μύκηρος (s.v.) and Hitt. mitgaimi `sweet bread, Luw. id `sweet(ened)'. A loan is Lat. amygdala, also amiddula, amyndala, amandula, from where OHG mandala.Page in Frisk: 1,96Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἀμυγδάλη

Grammatical information: f. The form is early in names, Dobias-Lalou, Inscr. Cyrène, 2000, 6. Late ἄρξ (OGI 201, 15).Derivatives: Demin. ἀρκτύλος (Poll.), ἄρκυλλος (Sch. Opp.), ἄρκιλος (Eust.); ἀρκτῳ̃ος `id.' (Luc.; after ἑῳ̃ος from ἕως); ἄρκ(τ)ειος `belonging to a bear' (Dsc.; after αἴγειος, βόειος etc.); ἀρκτῆ (aus - έη) f. `skin of a bear' (Anaxandr.). ἄρκτιον n. plant name, `Inula candida' (Dsc.; Strömberg Pflanzennamen 118). - Whether Άρκάδες (s.v.) belongs here, is uncertain s. Sommer Ahh. u. Sprw. 63f.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [864] *h₂rtḱo- `bear'Etymology: The late form with single - κ- is confirmed by derivations; it must be just simplification (or from before the metathesis?). Old name of the bear: Skt. ŕ̥kṣa-, Av. arša-, Arm. arǰ, Lat. ursus, Celt., e.g. MIr. art. Hitt. ḫartagga- lead to the reconstruction *h₂rtḱo-. In Germanic and Balto-Slavic the name was replaced, prob. for taboo-reasons; cf. Emeneau Lang. 24, 56ff. The old etymology as `destroyer' (Skt. rákṣas-, Aw. raš- `damage) has now become untenable. Note στροφαί. ἀστραπαίH.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Mostly taken as `star-eye' from ἀστήρ and ὀπ- (in ὄψ `eye', ὄψομαι) with -η ( ὀπή `opening'), what seemed confirmed by Arm. p` ayl-akn `lightning' (cf. p` ayl `gleam, splendour' and akn `eye') and areg-akn `sun' (from arew `sun' and akn), Meillet Handes Amsorya 41, 757ff., s. Grammatical information: m. (f.)Meaning: `spindle' (Hdt.), also `arrow' (S., acc. Th. 4, 40 Laconian).Other forms: ἄδρακτος H. (LSJ Supp.), Gloss.Derivatives: ἀτρακτυλ(λ)ίς, - ίδος `spindle-thistel, Carthamus lanatus' (Arist.). ἀτρακίς kind of thistle (Strömberg Pflanz. 105).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Compared with Skt. tarku- `spindle'. The connection with Lat. torqueo, and now Myc. toroqejomeno \/ trokʷeiomenos\/, is impossible (it would have given π, not κ with Schwyzer 299). The ending has been compared with στρατός, σπάρτον, but remains strange. The ἀ- would also remain unexplained. - Unclear also Alb. tjerr `to spin'. So rather a loan (from the substr.); perh. confirmed by ἄδρακτος and ἀτρακίς, if the variation κ\/κτ is old and not due to simplification ; for - τος cf. ἄσφαλτος and Chantr. Form. 300f. 60 βασσάρα
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `fox' (Sch. Lyk. 771), `dress of bacchante's' (EM, AB, H.) from the skin of a fox; `bacchante' (Sch. Lyk. 771, EM), `impudent woman' (Lyk., EM).Derivatives: βασσάριον `fox' (Hdt. 4, 192; Libyan), βασσαρεύς name of Dionysos (Hor.), βάσσαρος = βάκχος (Orph.); denom. ἀνα-βασσαρέω `break forth in Bacchic frenzy' (Anacr.).Origin: LW [a loanword which is (probably) not of Pre-Greek origin] Egypt.Etymology: Herodotus calls the word Libyan. This seems confirmed by the etymology with Egypt. wasar, Copt. bašor (Szemerényi, Gnomon 43 (1971) 660, without reference). Szemerényi further wants to maintain the connection with Hitt. wassuwar `clothing' for the dress; rejected by Neumann, Weiterleben (1961) 19, I think rightly so. Fur. 257 n. 36 notes that βάσσος = βασσάρα (EM) and that - αρ(ος) is a frequent Pre-Gr. suffix.Page in Frisk: 1,224Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > βασσάρα
