Th. 94 on δαυχμός (v. l. δαῦκος) are mentioned: Πλούταρχος πλείονα μέν φησι γένη τῆς βοτάνης εἶναι, τὸ δε κοινὸν τῆς δυνάμεως ἰδίωμα δριμὺ καὶ πυρῶδες. But the Daukos-plants will rather have their name from the gummi-like sap, which is taken from certain kinds and which burns with hell flame; cf. δαυχμόν εὔκαυστον ξύλον δάφνης. (Note the form καῦκον in Ps.-Dsc. 2, 139, which was influenced by κάω, καῦσαι.) - Mediterranean origin is quite possible. We shall see under δάφνη that we have to do with one word. With θῆ-σθαι agree also OHG tāen, Latv. dêt `suck' (IE * dhē-); both languages have a yot-present, tāju, dêju, which is possible in θῆ-σθαι (\< *θή-ι̯ε-σθαι?), which seems athematic. As the other representatives of this etymon have θη- in Greek ( θηλή, θῆλυς, τιθήνη, γαλαθηνός; also θήνιον γάλα H.; (not τιθασός), it is obvious to see in θῆσθαι an innovation after θήσατο. - Beside IE * dheh₁- in θη- (cf. in Skt. fut. dhāsyati, dhātrī `whet-nurse' etc.) stands * dhī- in Skt. dhītá- `sucked', MHG dīen `sucked, give the breast'; further Skt. dhenā `milch-cow' point to * dʰeh₁-i-. Clearly the root is κιβδ- (on the suffix - ηλο- Fur. 115 n. 5); this shows that - βδ- most probably is one phoneme; I propose it was (the voiced representative of) *py.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: Term of miners without etymology (cf. on μέταλλον).
