61 Serge
SARGE, SERGEA coarse, woollen cloth known as early as the 12th century, a finer quality being called " say." It was much used during the Middle Ages for all portions of attire by the poorer classes, and in the piece for the decoration of houses. ————————SERGE (U.S.A.)The specification issued by the U.S.A. Government is as follows: - Cotton and worsted serge for overcoat lining shall be of single or 2-ply cotton warp and single or 2-ply worsted filling, the wool to be not below 46's grade; the width shall be full 36-in. exclusive of the selvedge and shall weigh from 6-oz. to 7-oz. per linear yard; it shall be woven in regular serge weave and constructed so as to give a fabric with good body and twill line on the face and containing approximately equal quantities of worsted and cotton yarns throughout; to be navy-blue, fast to the light, with both sets of threads and to be put up into bookfold. ———————— This term was formerly applied in Yorkshire to rough handling coarse wool fabrics woven in a twill design. An old 6-end serge was a simple diagonal 3 up, 1 down, 1 up, 1 down. The term serge is now almost universally understood to mean the 2 & 2 twill, and sometimes the 3 & 3 and the 4 & 4 twills. In wool fabrics it is the practice to add to the name serge, the definition of botany to distinguish fine wool serges from cross-bred qualities. A typical botany worsted serge, 2 & 2 twill weave, 21-02. per yard, 56/58-in. is made with 2/20's worsted 64/70's quality, S twist, 46 ends and 46 picks per inch, 72-in. wide in loom, woven white arid piece-dyed. The cloth is clear finished so as to obtain a well-defined twill effect. A usual weight for ladies' costume serge is 12/13-oz. per yard. Serges are made in many qualities ranging from 12-oz. to 26-oz. per yard. Crossbred worsted yarns are used in making the rougher and stronger types, while woollen yarns are also used. A serge which is extensively used in uniforms for transport workers is made with two-fold cross-bred worsted yarn for warp and single Cheviot woollen yarn for weft. The cloth is woven white or grey and piece-dyed. -
62 Johnson, Thomas
SUBJECT AREA: Textiles[br]fl. 1800s Englandd. after 1846[br]English developer of the sizing and beaming machine, and improver of the hand loom.[br]Thomas Johnson was an assistant to William Radcliffe c.1802 in his developments of the sizing machine and hand looms. Johnson is described by Edward Baines (1835) as "an ingenious but dissipated young man to whom he [Radcliffe] explained what he wanted, and whose fertile invention suggested a great variety of expedients, so that he obtained the name of the “conjuror” among his fellow-workmen". Johnson's genius, and Radcliffe's judgement and perseverance, at length produced the dressing-machine that was soon applied to power looms and made their use economic. Cotton warps had to be dressed with a starch paste to prevent them from fraying as they were being woven. Up to this time, the paste had had to be applied as the warp was unwound from the back of the loom, which meant that only short lengths could be treated and then left to dry, holding up the weaver. Radcliffe carried out the dressing and beaming in a separate machine so that weaving could proceed without interruption. Work on the dressing-machine was carried out in 1802 and patents were taken out in 1803 and 1804. These were made out in Johnson's name because Radcliffe was afraid that if his own name were used other people, particularly foreigners, would discover his secrets. Two more patents were taken out for improvements to hand looms. The first of these was a take-up motion for the woven cloth that automatically wound the cloth onto a roller as the weaver operated the loom. This was later incorporated by H.Horrocks into his own power loom design.Radcliffe and Johnson also developed the "dandy-loom", which was a more compact form of hand loom and later became adapted for weaving by power. Johnson was the inventor of the first circular or revolving temples, which kept the woven cloth at the right width. In the patent specifications there is a patent in 1805 by Thomas Johnson and James Kay for an improved power loom and another in 1807 for a vertical type of power loom. Johnson could have been involved with further patents in the 1830s and 1840s for vertical power looms and dressing-machines, which would put his death after 1846.[br]Bibliography1802, British patent no. 2,684 (dressing-machine).1803, British patent no. 2,771 (dressing-machine).1805, with James Kay, British patent no. 2,876 (power-loom). 1807, British patent no. 6,570 (vertical powerloom).Further ReadingThere is no general account of Johnson's life, but references to his work with Radcliffe may be found in A.Barlow, 1878, The History and Principles of Weaving by Hand and by Power, London; and in E.Baines, 1835, History of the Cotton Manufacture in Great Britain, London.D.J.Jeremy, 1981, Transatlantic Industrial Revolution. 66 Buckram
A strong linen cloth, plain weave, stiffened with a flour paste, china clay and glue. A very low open texture cotton cloth used for hat linings, and is very heavily finished. It is made by pasting two cotton cloths together, one a low open fabric made about 14 X 14 per inch, 8's warp, 12's weft, and the other a much finer cloth, such as 56 X 60, 40's/50's. Each fabric is first stiffened. The fabric known as buckram in the 14th century was used in conjunction with stuffs of fine and precious quality so it is not certain that the cloths are the same. The old fabric was also known as Bougran and Bouquerant. It was stiffened with gum and originally came from Bokhara. -

71 Batiste
Is a cloth of French origin. The term is now applied to a light Swiss-finished cloth, made from ecru coloured yarns when cotton, and grey yarns when flax is used. It is very fine in quality, and as many as 15 yards of 32-in. cloth are required to weigh 1-lb.; 80's to 100's warp and 100's to 160's weft are used in the cotton variety. In flax two qualities are: - 1/42, 86 X 78 per inch, 110's/140's; 2/42-in., 132 X 108 per inch, 22's/240's. This latter cloth is hand woven. A low Batiste is shipped to China and India and is, in fact, merely a cheap plain cloth with a special finish termed a " Batiste Finish." Generally woven such as follows: 50-in. splits, 54 X 52, 40/46. A wool Batiste is also made from very fine yarns and is very similar to nun's veiling. Generally dyed in light shades and used for good quality underclothing. -
72 Estamenes
A 2 & 2 twill worsted cloth, loosely woven from rough yarns. The cloth, when finished, has a fuzzy fibrous appearance, due to the " napping " of the fibres during the process of milling. Made to imitate the French cloth " estame," which is a knitted worsted. One weave is made with 56 ends and 56 picks per inch from 2/36's worsted warp and weft. A cheaper cloth is made 56 ends and 56 picks per inch of 2/36's warp, 20's weft, all worsted. The cloth is also known as Tammy. -

77 Seersucker
CRINKLE, or SEERSUCKEROriginally a silk fabric with flat and puckered stripes alternating across the fabric. Now applied to cotton dress fabrics of the better quality crimp styles, woven 32-in. wide in many weights. Two beams are required, one for the crimp stripes and one for the ordinary. One cloth has 72 ends and 72 picks per inch, 2/60's and 30's warps, 32's weft, super Egyptian yarns (see Seersucker) ————————SEERSUCKER (See Crinkle)This term is common in the U.S.A., and given to a plain and crimped stripe fabric either bleached or dyed, and used for drapery and furnishings as well as dress purposes. A common quality is made 40-in. wide 64 ends and 64 picks per inch, 26's warp, 20's weft. Woven from two beams in stripes of plain weave and crimp which is also plain weave. The plain ground ends are firmly weighted and the crimping ends are lightly weighted. Fancy designs are obtained by using colour or rayon in the warps. Another class of seersucker is made from a plain cotton cloth that is printed in stripes with a preparation that will resist the action of caustic soda. The cloth is passed through a concentrated solution of caustic soda and the imprinted part shrinks. The effect is that of crimped stripes. -
78 Tricot
A rib fabric with crossover effect with two colours of weft. Woven in check looms from all cotton; about 20's warp and 40's weft. The cloth is actually a double weft rib, and when woven shows cross stripes in two different colours. ———————— The French name for knitted fabric and used in many countries. It is also called " jersey cloth " and " milanese silk cloth." -
79 Harris Tweed
A fabric defined for the purpose of the trade mark of the Harris Tweed Association as " tweed, hand-spun, hand-woven and dyed and finished by hand in the islands of Lewis, Harris, Uist, Barra, and their several purtenances, and all known as the Outer Hebrides." It is a loosely woven cloth from hill and mountain pure virgin wools. During finishing the cloths are dried in loft", heated with peat fires, which gives the peculiar odour noticed in the cloth. About 18 to 22 end and picks per inch and 120 yards per ounce warp and weft (see Harris Yarn). Also called Hebridean Cloth. The Board of Trade further provide that "Wherever the Harris Tweed trade mark is used there shall be added in legible characters the words ' Woven in Harris ' or ' Woven in Lewis ' or ' Woven in Uist ' or ' Woven in Barra,' as the case may be, and for the purpose of distinction there shall also be added the word "hand-spun" in the case of tweeds made entirely from hand-spun yam". -
80 Kalmuck

(2) A low grade heavy cotton fabric woven on the Continent also has the term Kalmuck applied to it. The cloth is woven on check looms in a low reed with strong grey cotton warp and two colours of weft. Only one colour appears on each side. Rather soft spun yarn is used for the weft and the fabric is raised on both sides. Construction 36 ends and 50 picks per inch. 16's warp hard spun and 4's to 6's weft.
