1907-1993La tan manida palabreja “artesano” se invento, sin duda, para definir a Gordon Douglas, un magnifico profesional, capaz de lo mejor y que no conocia la palabra “peor”. Una riquisima filmografia ilustra cualquier comentario elogioso que se quiera hacer acerca de este director, que realizo un punado de westerns, algunos de los cuales son, sencillamente, so berbios. Bastara con citar tres: Solo el valiente, un intenso drama claustrofobico, la enigmatica Embos cada y la itinerante Rio Conchos, modelo de virtudes cinematograficas. Neoyorquino, fue primero ac tor infantil, despues actor joven, mas tarde creador de gags para Hal Roach y, por fin, realizador. RKO, Columbia y, sobre todo, Warner Bros consumieron lo esencial de su labor como director. Fue para la ultima para la que realizo sus mejores peliculas, y tambien sus mejores westerns. Probablemente la obra maestra de Douglas sea su filme fantastico La humanidad en peligro (Them!, 1954), producto modesto pero de una intensidad casi nunca alcanzada en el cine de ciencia-ficcion. Hay que decir, con pena, que fracaso en el innecesario remake de Stagecoach, que rodo en 1966, y que en Espana llevo el titulo Hacia los grandes horizontes.Girl Rush. 1944. 65 minutos. 1916-1946Un vistazo a la filmografia de este estupendo director muestra lo bien que sabe adaptarse a cualquier circunstancia de presupuesto, argumento o reparto. Despues de un duro y fructifero aprendizaje en la serie B, donde nos ofrecio alguna que otra pequena joya, pasa a los filmes de presupuesto importante, y en ellos destaca como un magnifico director de actores y por su capacidad para crear climas opresivos en contextos diversos, desde el violento de Sabado tragico (Violent Saturday, 1955), hasta el melodramatico de La muchacha del trapecio rojo (The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing, 1955). Un repaso a su extensa y estimulante filmografia parece fuera de lugar aqui, donde si hay que destacar un singular y notable western crepuscular, Duelo en el barro, en el que se reunen todas las grandes virtudes de Fleis cher como director de cine.Arena. 1953. 83 minutos.
