    КОММЕНТАРИЙ:on the other hand... (противит.)...же; В свою очередь; А...; Что же касается...
    «Дежурный» перевод «с другой стороны» - это штамп, заученный нами с детства. Дело в том, что русский оборот «с другой стороны», как правило, относится к одному и тому же (!) предмету, лицу, явлению и т.д., а английское «on the other hand», опять-таки, как правило, - к разным (!) предметам, лицам, явлениям и т.д. Если сомневающийся в этом читатель отныне станет обращать внимание на эту тонкость, то он быстро убедится в этом сам. Я мог бы привести здесь много примеров в обоснование своей точки зрения, но ограничусь лишь одним, взятым из книги о династии Романовых The Romanovs, by Virginia Cowles, Harper & Row. Этот пример относится ко времени воцарения Николая I, когда из-за нежелания Константина Павловича взойти на российский престол возникла заминка, приведшая в конечном итоге к восстанию декабристов.
    Not only was he [ Constantine] satisfied with his job as a Viceroy of Poland but determined to continue living in Warsaw with his Polish wife. Nicolas, on the other hand, was both willing and eager to rule. Он [Константин] был не только удовлетворен своей ролью вице-короля Польши, но и преисполнен решимости и впредь жить в Варшаве со своей женой-полькой. Что же касается Николая, то он / А Николай / Николай же был не только согласен, но и жаждал править.
    Вариант «С другой стороны, Николай...» в данном контексте звучал бы не по-русски, поскольку перед этим речь шла не о нем, а о его брате.
    @out of hand 1. наотрез 2. категорически 3. (разг.) «с порога»
