1 σπεῖρα
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `twist, for instance of a snake, of a network, spiral', des. of everal wound or cicular objetcs, e.g. `rope, belt, bead, round base of a pillar' (Ion. poet., also hell. a. late prose; v.l. ζ 269); also as military term = Lat. manipulus (hell.; on the explanation [prop. `bundle'] Debrunner IF 48, 244), later = cohors (inscr. a. pap., Act. Ap. a.o.).Compounds: Some compp., e.g. σπειρο-κέφαλον n. `base and capital of a column', ὑπό-σπειρον n. "what lies under the round base", `square slab, πλίνθος' (inscr.).Derivatives: 1. σπειρ-ίον n. `little column base' (Hero); 2. - ικός `belonging to a σ.' (Hero); 3. - ίτης (sc. λίθος) `stone for a column base' (inscr. Didyma; Redard 64 w. n. 26, with other interpretation); 4. - αία f. `privet' (Thphr.; from the form of the inflorescence); 5. - ηδόν `in convolutions, in a circle' (Opp., AP). 6. denom. verb σπειρ-άομαι, also w. περι- a. o., `to convolve' (hell. a. late), older συ-σπειράομαι `to wind, to pull together' (Pl., X., Arist. a. o.), also act. συ-, περι-σπειράω `to wind, to pull together' (hell. pap., D.S. a.o.); from this σπείρ-ᾱμα, Ion. - ημα n. `twist, for instance of a snake, band etc.' (A., Arist., Nic. a.o.; also enlarged from σπεῖρα? Chantraine Form. 184). 7. Also ( συ-) σπειρόομαι `to wind (together)' (Hp., Thphr.), act. aor. σπειρῶσαι `to swathe' (Call.; from σπεῖρον?).Etymology: Like πεῖρα, στεῖρα, μοῖρα feminine ια-derivation; whether first from a noun or verb, cannot be decided (cf. Schwyzer 474, Chantraine Form. 98 f.). Finally in any case from the same verb `wind, twine', which is seen in σπάρτον, σπεῖρον and σπάργανον(?). The primary verb was replaced partly by the secondary σπειράομαι, σπαργανόω, partly by other verbs like εἰλέω, εἰλύω.Page in Frisk: 2,761Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σπεῖρα

Adesp., H.), f., ἀπομάκτρια (Poll.). 7. μάκτρα f. `baking trough' (Com., X.), `trough, bathing tub, sarcophagus' (hell.; wr. μάκρα, Schwyzer 337); ( ἔκ-, ἀπό-)-μάκτρον `offprint, towel etc.' (E., Ar.). 8. μακτήριον = μάκτρα (Plu.). 9. μακτρισμός name of a dance (Ath.; after κορδακισμός; cf. on μακτήρ above) with - ίστρια name of a danceress (ebd.). -- 10. ἀπομαγδαλιά (Ar., Plu., Gal.), μαγδαλιά (Gal.; - έα Hippiatr.) `bread crumb for handwashing'; like ἁρμαλιά, φυταλιά etc. (Scheller Oxytonierung 90), but with unexplained δ (after *ἀπομάγδην?). -- 11. With auslaut. κ: μακαρία βρῶμα ἐκ ζωμοῦ καὶ ἀλφίτων H. -- On μᾶζα s. v.Etymology: For comparison we have words with final g, IE *maǵ-, esp. in Germanic and Baltoslavic, e.g. NHG machen, OS makōn `make, erect, build', if prop. `knead, form', OCS mažǫ, mazati `smear, salve'; further Celt., e.g. Bret. meza `knead'; uncertain Arm. macanim, macnum `stick fast, congeal'. On the other hand we find a final k with nasal, IE * menk-, in Lith. mìnkau, mánkau, - yti `knead a weak masse', OCS mǫka, Russ. muká `flour' and many other Baltoslavic words; from Germ. one might consider NHG mengen, OE mengan etc., if prop. `knead together'; from Skt. macate `crush etc.' (Dhātup.). Further there are a few longvowel words without nasal: Latv. màcu, màkt `press, plague' and Lat. māceria `wall)kneaded from loam'. -- Of the Greek word only the isolated μακαρία has a clear tenuis, as μάσσω (first from *μακ-ι̯ω) can be explained as a deviation. As however also μαγῆναι as well as the nominal γ-forms can be so explained (cf. Schwyzer 760), one can explain Greek if necessary with IE * menk. A suppletive system * menk (: μακαρία, μάσσω): maǵ-(: μαγῆναι) is conceivable -- WP. 2, 224, 226f., 268, Pok. 696f., 698, 730f., W.-Hofmann s. māceria, Fraenkel s. mìnkyti u. mė́šlas, Vasmer s. mázatь, muká, mjágkij; s. also Bq. - One retains some doubts however; note among other things the form - μαγδαλιά; further the supposed interchange * menk-: *meh₂ǵ- arouses suspicion.Page in Frisk: 2,180-181Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μάσσω

5 ὄχλος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: 1. `(orderless, moved) crowd, (common) multitude, great mass, throng', pl. `crowd, people'; 2. `disturbance, perturbation, annoyance' (Pi., IA.).Compounds: Compp., e.g. ὀχλο-κρατία f. `mob-rule' (Plb., Plu., s. lit. on δημοκρατία), ἄ-οχλος `without disturbances, not disturbing' (Hp.).Derivatives: Adj. 1. ὀχλ-ηρός `bothersome, annoying' (IA.) with - ηρία f. (LXX); 2. - ικός `belonging to a great multitude, mobbish' (hell.); 3. - ώδης `annoying' (IA.), `popular, common' (Plu.). Subst. 4. ὀχλεύς μοχλός, στρόφιγξ, δεσμός... H.; ἐποχλεύς m. `sprag on a cart' (Ath.), prob. for *ἐποχεύς; ἐποχλίζομαι `to be bolted' (Apollon. Lex.). -- Denominative verbs 5. ὀχλέω `to put in (rolling) motion, to roll away' (Φ 261; ἀν-οχλέω = ἀν-οχλίζω S. E.), `to disturb, to perturb, to bother' (Ion., hell.; w. prefix, esp. ἐν-, also Att.); from it ὄχλ-ησις ( ἐν- ὄχλος) f. `bothering, interference, perturbation' (Democr., hell.), ( ἐν-)ὄχλ-ημα `id.' (Epicur., medic.), ὀχλητι-κός = ὀχλικός (Procl.); 6. ὀχλεύονται = ὀχλεῦνται κυλινδοῦνται H.; 7. ὀχλ-ίζω, also w. μετ-, ἀν- a.o., `to pull up, out of place' (Il.); 8. ὀχλ-άζω `to be disturbed, confused' (LXX).Origin: IE [Indo-European] [1118] *u̯eǵh- `move, drive, ride'Etymology: The orig. meaning of the verbal nouns ὄχλος, which was concretized as `heap, crowd', cannot be established with more certainty; in the sense of `perturbation etc.' it may have been influenced by ὀχλέω (cf. Bosshardt 78). If one starts from *Ϝόχ-(σ)λο-ς (on the possible loss of a Ϝ- in Hom. s. Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 125), ὄχλος agrees well with the well-known verb for `drive, carry, bring, move' in Ϝέχω (s. 2. ἔχω), ὀχέομαι, Lat. vehō etc., IE *u̯oǵh-(s)lo-; cf. the interpretations of Sealey Glotta 37, 281 ff. The broad sphere of meaning gives several possibiliies: *'driving, carrying, moving', resp. as nom. agentis or instr. *'driver, carryer, mover'. -- Formally identical is OWNo. vagl m. `tiebeam, roost' (prop. *'bearing-bar, carrier'). To the denominative ὀχλ-ίζω `raise', ὀχλ-έω `roll away' and to ὀχλ-εύς `lever etc.' agree semantically the primary nouns Lat. vec-tis and OWNo. vǫg (IE *u̯oǵhā) `lever'. From *`move, movement' one gets both to `moved mass, mob' and to `spiritual movement, unrest'; the same holds for the denominative ὀχλέω (cf. turba, - āre). -- Uncertain supposition on cross with μοχλός, - έω in Güntert Reimwortbildungen 161 f. Older hypothesis in Bq (rejected). Wrong Belardi Doxa 3, 217. -- Further lit. s. ὄχος.Page in Frisk: 2,456-457Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ὄχλος

Compp., z.B. πόκ-υφος m. `wool weaver' (pap. IIa); εἰρο-πόκος (s. εἶρος), εὔ-ποκος `with fair wool' (A.); with referenc to the verb νεό-ποκος `newly shorn' ( μαλλός, S.).Derivatives: 1. πόκος m. `plucked, shorn off sheep's wool, fleece' (Μ 451, hell.). ποκ-άριον ( Sammelb. III--IVp), - άδες pl. f. `lock or tuft of wool or hair' (Ar.), Πόκιος m. (sch., Suid.); - όομαι `to be covered like with a fleece' (AP). 2. πόκτος m. `id.' ( Lyr. Adesp. 73, Hdn.), like φόρτος (Schwyzer 704 n. 6), if not to πεκτέω. 3. πέκος n. `id.' (An. (Ar.; not πέκτω, Peruzzi Par. del Pass. 18, 396 n. 2); on the formation Schwyzer 705f. -- On κτείς s. v.Origin: IE [Indo-European] [797] *peḱ- `pluck, card'Etymology: Identical with Lith. pešù, pèšti `pluck, pull out, drew by the hairs'; the τ-enlargement in πεκτ-έω also in Lat. pectō `comb, card'; formal = Gerrn., e.g. OHG fehtan ' fech-ten' (prop. *'pluck each other'?). The very rare πέκος agrees phonetically with Lat. pecus n. `cattle, small cattle, sheep', which would be therefore a concretized verbal abstract (Porzig Satzinhalte 292; also Specht KZ 66, 36f.). The old widespread u-stem in Lat. pecu n., Germ., e.g. OHG fihu n., Skt. páśu- n., -úḥ m. etc. `cattle' is wanting in Greek; on the other hand πόκος is isolated, so prob. innovation. IE o -vowel also in Arm. asr, gen. asu `sheepwool, fleece' (IE *poḱu-). OWNo. fær, OSwed. fār n. `sheep', often equated with πόκος, is uncertain. -- Orig. meaning prob. `pluck, card', from where `shear, comb' (diff. Peruzzi Par. del Pass. l.c. n. 3 against Specht KZ 68, 206). -- WP. 2, 16f., Pok. 797, W.-Hofmann s. pectō and pecū, Fraenkel s. pèšti `pluck' w. further forms a. rich lit.Page in Frisk: 2,492-493Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πέκω
