Grammatical information: f.Origin: GR [a formation built with Greek elements]X [probably]Etymology: It is supposed that κατ' ἄκνηστιν stands for older κατὰ κνῆστιν `rasp' (κ 161), Wackernagel Glotta 2, 1, Fraenkel Glotta 4, 42, Leumann Hom. Wörter 49; on κνῆστις s. s.v. - κναίω. - DELG suggests that the word was created earlier, with prothetic ἀ-, which is impossible (does this proposal imply doubt about the traditional interpretation?).Page in Frisk: 1,54Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἄκνηστις

54 βασκαύλης
Grammatical information: m\/f?Meaning: unknown utensil ( POxy. 1, 109, 22, III-IVp).Other forms: Perhaps μασκαύληςOrigin: LW [a loanword which is (probably) not of Pre-Greek origin] Celt.Etymology: Grenfell-Hunt suggest Lat. vasculum, but this wil hardly give the Greek form. WH thought that it was a loan from Lat. bascauda, m-. (Mart.) `eherner Spülnapf'. Thus Szemerényi, Gnomon 43 (1971) 660, but his proposal that the Greek word is due to a mis reading of Λ for Δ is improbable; it could well be a phonetic development. Fur. 212 thinks that the word is Pre-Greek, as shown by b\/m and d\/l. He further recalls Talmud. maskel `basin', which would confirm origin in an Anatolian language. But Martialis 14, 99 seems to prove that the word is Celtic (or perhaps a Eur. substratum word).Page in Frisk: 1,224Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > βασκαύλης

From * galakt, with loss of the final consonants and development of sec. vowel in nom.-acc.-form (cf. on γυνή) γάλα, and analogical γάλακτος. - J. An ρ-derivation from τύφω with nasalisation and deaspiration (Persson Stud. 56 n. 4 ;) is most improbable: there is no nasalization in Greek (except in Pre-Greek) and there was no deaspiration after nasal ( ἀμφί); the proposal is rejected by DELG - Further Slavic plant names are mentioned like Russ. dubrávka `Potentilla erecta'; "alles ganz hypothetisch oder unwahrscheinlich (dubrávka wohl von dubráva `Laubwald, Park')" Frisk. Niedermann Glotta 19, 14 recalls an Anatolian GN like Θύμβρη, Θύμβριον, and on the other side Τυφρηστός (southern spur of the Pindos, called after θύμβρα?). - It is clearly a non-(IE-)Greek plant-name, prob. Pre-Greek. The Anatolian place name could stem from a related language. Note also the metathesized form.
