24 ἔφηλις
ἔφηλις, - ίςMeaning: technical term of uncertain meaning, etwa `rivet, butt' or `clinch'?; acc. to H. ἐφήλιδες περόναι, ἔπηλις τὸ πῶμα τῆς λάρνακος (S. Fr. 1046, hell.); usually metaph. as name of an effloresence(?) (Nic.), in this meamimg mostly in plur. (Hp., Thphr.), also explained as `freckles' and connected with ἥλιος (= αἱ τοῦ ἡλίου ἐπικαύσεις H.).Other forms: gen. - ιδος, - ίδος, pl. also - εις, Ion. ἔπηλις (after Hdn. Gr. 1, 91 barytone), - ιδος f.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: On the ι(δ)-stem s. Schwyzer 450, 464f., Chantraine Formation 113f. - Because of the unclear meaning morphologically uncertain. There are three, or four explanations: 1. als hypostasis of ἐφ' ἥλου (ὤν): a) `what is upon a ἧλος (`pin')'; b) `upper (part of a) ἧλος'. 2. bahuvrihi: `equipped with a ἧλος'. 3. postverbal of ἐφηλοῦν `pin down, fix': `what has been pinned down'; cf. ἔφηλος ὁ ἡλωμένος Suid. 25 κλείς
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `bar, bolt' (sec. `rowing bench', Leumann Hom. Wörter 209), ` hook, key, collar bone' (Il.).Other forms: κλειδός, κλεῖν (late κλεῖδα), older κλῄς, κλῃδός, κλῃ̃δα (on the notation Schwyzer 201f.), ep. Ion. κληΐς, - ῖδος, - ῖδα, Dor. κλᾱΐς, - ῖδος beside - ίδος (Simon., Pi.; Aeol.?, cf. Schwyzer 465), besides κλᾳξ (Theoc.), κλαικος, - κα (Epid., Mess.)Dialectal forms: Myc.. karawiporo = κλαϜι-φόροςCompounds: Compp., e. g. κλειδ-οῦχος ( κλῃδ-) m. f. `key-holder' (inscr.), κατα-κλείς, - κληΐς `lock, case, quiver' (Att.; from κατα-κλείω);Derivatives: Diminut. κλειδίον (Ar., Arist.); κλειδᾶς m. `lock-smith' (pap., inscr., Empire); late denomin. κλειδόω (Smyrna, pap.) with κλείδωσις (sch.), - ωμα (Suid.). - Old denomin. κλείω, Oldatt. κλῄω, Ion. κληΐω (Hdt.), late κλῄζω ( Hymn. Is., AP), Theoc. κλᾳζω, aor. ep. Ion. κληϊ̃σαι, κληΐσσαι (Od.), Oldatt. κλῃ̃σαι, Att. κλεῖσαι, pass. κληϊσθῆναι, κλῃσθῆναι, κλεισθῆναι (Ion. resp. Att.), κλᾳσθῆναι (Theoc.), fut. κλῄσω (Th.), κλείσω, perf. κέκλῃκα (Ar.), κέκλεικα (hell.), midd. κέκλῃμαι (-ήϊμαι), κέκλειμαι, Dor. κέκλᾳνται (Epich.); after it Dor. aor. ( κλαΐξαι) κλᾳ̃ξαι, pass. κλαιχθείς, fut. κλᾳξῶ (Theoc., Rhod.), backformed present ποτι-κλᾳγω (Heracl.), often with prefix, esp. ἀπο-, κατα-, συν-, `shut, block'. From there κλήϊθρον, κλῃ̃θρον, κλεῖθρον, κλᾳ̃θρον `lock, block' (IA. h. Merc. 146, Dor.) with κλειθρίον (Hero), κλειθρία `key-hole' (Luc.; cf. Scheller Oxytonierung 54), κλάϊστρον (Pi.), κλεῖστρον (Luc.) `lock', κλῃ̃σις, κλεῖσις (Th., Aen. Tact.), κλεῖσμα, κλεισμός (hell.; also ἀπόκλῃσις etc. from ἀπο-κλείω etc.); verbal adj. κληϊστός, κλῃστός, κλειστός (ep. IA.), κλαικτός ( κλᾳκτός) `what can be locked' (Argiv., Mess.). - On κλεισίον s. κλίνω.Etymology: Ion. Att. κλη(Ϝ)ῑ-δ- and Dor. κλᾱ(Ϝ)ῑ-κ- are dental- resp. velar enlargements of an ῑ-stem, which can still be seen in κληΐω. (Diff. Debrunner Mus. Helv. 3, 45ff.: κληΐω backformation from κληι̃̈̈ (δ)-σαι, from κληϊ̄δ-, cf. κληϊσ-τός). Att. κλεῖν can be easily explained (with Debrunner l. c.; also Schulze Kl. Schr. 419) as analogical to κλείς ( ναῦς: ναῦν a. o.). The ῑ-stem is based on a noun *κλᾱϜ(-ο)- like e. g. κνημί̄-δ- on κνήμη, χειρί̄-δ- on χείρ (Schwyzer 465, Chantraine Formation 346f.). - An exact agreement of the basic word can be found in Lat. clāvus `nail, pin', beside which, with the same meaning as the derived κληΐς, clāvis `key, block'; because of the semantic identity a loan from Greek has been considered, cf. Ernout-Meillet s. v. and (rejecting) W.-Hofmann 1, 230. (But clātrī pl. `lattice-work' from pl. Dor. κλᾳ̃θρα). Further there is a Celtic word, e. g. OIr. clō, pl. clōi `nail' (Lat. LW [loanword]?). Slavic has a few words with an eu-diphthong, IE. *klē̆u-, e. g. OCS a. Russ. ključь `key', SCr. kljȕka `hook, ey, clamp'. - The original meaning of the word was prob. `nail, pin, hook', instruments, of old use for locking doors. - More forms in Pok. 604f., W.-Hofmann s. claudō, Fraenkel Lit. et. Wb. s. kliū́ti.Page in Frisk: 1,867-868Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κλείς

26 κωλύω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `hinder, prevent' (Sapph., Pi., IA.).Other forms: κωλῦσαι.Derivatives: κώλυμα `obstacle' (IA.) with κωλυμάτιον `catch, clutch in a machine' (Hero); κωλύμη (Th.; cf. Chantraine Formation 150), κώλύσις `hindering' (Pl., Arist.); κωλυτήρ (Archyt.), - τής (IA.) `who hinders' wit κωλυτήριος (D. H.), κωλυτικός (X., Arist., hell.) `hindering'.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Not well explained. Hypothesis by WP. 2, 591 (after Meillet): prop. "fasten with a pin", of animals, to hinder their freedom of movement, from *κῶλος `wooden pin' (: Lith. kuõlas `pole') with ending after λύω; doubtful. By others (Meillet MSL 16, 244, Fraenkel Mél. Bq 1, 357) connected with κολούω `mutilate'.Page in Frisk: 2,61Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κωλύω

27 σπίλος 1
σπίλος 1.Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `rock, reef' (Ion. Trag., Arist., Lyχ., Peripl. M. Rubr. α.ο.);Other forms: Beside it, favoured by the metre, 1. σπιλάς, - άδος f., mostly pl. - άδες `id.' (Od.); also as attr. of πέτρα (A. R.); - αδώδης `rocky' (Str.). PN Σπιλα-δίας (Eretria IIIa; Bechtel Lex. s. σπιλάς).Compounds: διά-σπιλος (Peripl. M. Rubr.),Derivatives: σπιλώδης (Arist., Plb.) `rocky'.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: No agreement outside Greek. Formally agree except for the vowellength some Germ. words, e.g. MHG spīl m. `point of a spear', NHG dial. Speil `chip, splitter', MLG NLG. spīle `broach'. Besides in the north shortvowel forms, e.g. OWNo. spila f. `thin and small piece of wood'. Balt. word that belong here, e.g. Latv. spīle `fork, pin', Lith. spylỹs m. `spike, prickle', are suspect of being, like Čech. spíle `pin', Pol. spila `spear', loans from German or at least to have been influenced by German; s. Fraenkel s. spielóti. (On ἄσπιλος χείμαρρος see σπιλάς 1.) -- (As further cognates with varying final consonants are adduced: with r e.g. MLG spīr `point of germ, grass, tower', with k Lat. spīca `ear (of corn)', with n Lat. spīna `thorn' etc. etc.; all put together under * spei- `point, pointed piece of wood' in WP. 2, 653ff. (after Persson Beitr. 1, 397ff. a. o.) and Pok. 981. It seems quite doubtful to me that these words have enything to do with the Greek word.)Page in Frisk: 2,767-768Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σπίλος 1
