A silk fabric made in India from native silk. Plain weave, about 72 ends and 72 picks per inch, and 120 to 150 denier yarns. Used for dress purposes and handkerchiefs. A bordered cotton handkerchief made from blue and white yarns about 48 ends and 48 picks per inch, 18's warp, 20's weft. In designs with blue predominating. The British Navy supplies this cloth to sailors. -
82 Scrim
A very loosely woven muslin style of cloth with coloured stripes. Intended for curtains or drapery. A very low muslin cloth is also given this name, and is used for hat linings by being pasted to another cloth - generally made about 12 ends and 12 picks per inch, from a poor grade of yarn, counts about 34's/28's. In the linen trade scrims are made from about 24's warp and weft (lea) and set 24 ends and 20 picks per inch in many widths for casement curtains. -
83 Skirting
(1) Wool sorting term for the stained parts of the fleece, such as the legs and the whole edge of the fleece. (2) Rag sorting term for rags of women's dress goods and men's coat linings containing cotton and wool. ———————— A cotton cloth used for ladies' underwear. In the finer makes the plain weave is used, the warp is all colour in stripes and the weft is usually coloured. An average cloth has 88 ends and 72 picks per inch, 32's warp, 32's weft. The heavier makes are generally sateen weave, also with all colour warp in stripes in qualities about 92 ends and 52 picks per inch, 34's warp, 16's to 24's weft. This heavy cloth is much used by market and field workers as an outer skirt. -
84 Slendongs
SLENDONGS, or PAHONESCotton scarves or shawls made 25-in. to 30-in. wide, 68-in. to 75 -in. long, with fancy headings and fringes at each end. Very similar to sarongs, but narrower. Most of this style of shawl have crammed coloured headings at each end. Common qualities are made with 72 ends and 52 picks per inch, 36's warp, 40's weft, in 25-in. widths. The headings are 3-in. wide, with 120 picks of various colours per inch. -

3. Do you speak ebonics?
Означает оно, на их диалекте, всего-навсего How are you doing? (На жаргоне высказана народная кошачья мудрость: "If the cat ain't happy — ain't nobody happy — В доме, где кот несчастлив, никто не счастлив".), еще один образец такого юмора см. Past Participle:I have live here twelve years. (lived) He pass him yesterday. (passed)2. He pick me. (picks) He never play no more, man. (plays) He don't know nobody. (doesn't)3. Типичны конструкции типа he done told me (done вместо has), might could (двойное сослагательное). Например вообще непонятное по обычным нормам "I been know your name" означает "I have known for a long time and still do" (Я тебя давно знаю). "It don't all be her fault" это "It isn't always her fault". Обычные слова используют необычно (примеры есть в словаре):Hit him upside the head. (Hit him in the head.) The rock say 'Shhh!' (The rock went `Shhh!') I wanna be a police. (I wanna be a policeman.)5. He be always fooling around. I'm a shoot you. (I'm g'na shoot you.) He a friend. He tired. He over there. He with us. He working with us. (is - везде).6. He useta was workin'. She useta hadda pick at me. If you can find that cancelled check, I may can go out there and get it. Can you get your civil rights without getting your head busted? You might will in the long run. Well, you must can't fuck good, then.7. Give him they book. (their)8. Cause I'll be done put-stuck so many holes in him he'll wish he wouldna said it. I done about forgot mosta those things. My father liketo kill me. I was liketo have got shot. He better hadda moved out. (W.Labow. Language in the Inner Cuty. University of Pennsylvania Press, Philadelphia, 1972). А. Someone asked, Is she married? and someone answered, She been married. Do you get the idea that she is married now?Yes ________________________No_________________________B. A teacher said, Do you know your number facts? and a boy answered, I been know them. Do you get the idea thathe's all ready to take the test ________________he has to brush up on this stuff ______________C. So what do you think been means in I been know them?used to know___know right now___knew but can't quite remember ___hawe known for a long time___Здесь мы остановимся и напомним, что еще существуют таблицы произношения - на эбониксе многие-многие слова произносятся нестандартно. Вот кусочек его беседы с Ларри (Larry) - многообещающим несовершеннолетним лидером уличной шпаны (inner-city street gang):JL: What happens to you after you die? Do you know? Larry: Yeah, I know. (What?) After they put you in the ground, your body turns into-ah-bones, an' shit. JL: What happens to your spirit? Larry: Your spirit-soon as you die, your spirit leaves you. (And where does the spirit go?) Well, it all depends.. (On what?) You know, like some people say if you're good an' shit, your spirit goin' t'heaven... 'n' if you bad, your spirit goin' to hell. Well, bullshit! Your spir:goin' to hell anyway, good or bad. Larry: Why? I'll tell you why. 'Cause, you see, doesn' nobody really know that it's a God, y'know, 'cause - I mean I have seen black gods, pink gods, white gods, all color gods, and don't nobody know it's really a God. An' when they be sayin' if you good, you goin' t'heaven, tha's bullshit, 'cause you ain't goin' to no heaven, 'cause it ain't no heaven for you to go to. JL: Well, if there's no heaven, how could there be a hell? Well, let me tell you, it ain't no hell, 'cause this is hell right here, y'know! (This is hell?) Yeah, this is hell right here! Да, это ад, прямо здесь!JL:... but, just say that there is a God, what color is he? White or black?... Larry: Well, if it is a God... I wouldn' know what color, I couldn' say,-couldn' nobody say what color he is or really would be. JL: But now, jus' suppose there was a God -Но, предположим сейчас, что Бог есть -Larry: Unless'n they say... JL: No, I was jus' sayin' jus' suppose there is a God, would he be white or black? Larry:...He'd be white, man.... Larry: Why? I'll tell you why. 'Cause the average whitey out here got everything, you dig? And the nigger ain't got shit, y'know? Y'unnerstan'? So-um-for-in order for that to happen, you know it ain't no black God that's doin' that bullshit. American slang. English-Russian dictionary > Глава 3. 87 Dobby Machines
These are exceedingly useful machines for forming the shed in weaving, since they can be used for both simple and complicated weaves. There are many types in use, most of which are negative acting in so far as they only lift the healds, springs being used beneath the healds to bring them down again after being lifted by the dobby. In the cotton trade 16 up 20 jacks is usual. Dobbies in common use are known as single lift, double lift, negative, positive, open shed, closed shed, and crossborder. Single Lift - In this type there is a single knife or griffe in use to raise the heald stave. The whole of the shafts return to their original position after each pick. A fresh selection of staves to be raised is made for each pick. Looms fitted with this dobby run slower than others, about 140 picks per minute. Double Lift - These machines are fitted with double selecting and lifting parts which move at half the speed of the loom. They give an open or semi-open shed. The speed of the loom is considerably more than for the single-lift type. Crossborder - This machine is used when headings or a change of weave is required as for bordered handkerchiefs, serviettes, towels, etc. Positive - Dobby machines which make an open shed and positively lift and depress the heald staves as required by the design. Negative - Dobbies which only lift the heald staves, and require springs or other means to move the staves to the bottom position. Centre Shed - Every thread of the warp is moved for every new shed. The shed opens from the middle. Some healds ascend and the others descend. Closed Shed - So termed because all the warp threads are brought to one level after each succeeding pick as in single-lift machines. Open Shed - The type generally used for automatic looms, also the double-lift machines. After a heald stave is lifted it remains up until it is required to be down again. The warp threads constantly form two lines, upper and lower, and the only changes are when threads move from line to the other. Semi-open Shed - This shed has a stationary bottom line, and to make changes, threads pass from the top to the bottom, or from the bottom to the top. The threads which remain up for more than one pick in succession only fall halfway and then go to the top again. -

89 Carpets
The principal types are Axminster, Brussels and Wilton, and brief particulars of each are given below. A more detailed description is given under each name. Axminster is a cut fabric made any width and with any number of colours. It is not produced on a jacquard, therefore the pile does not show on the back. The design is developed by a series of tufts which are bound into the fabric, every tuft is on the surface and only the foundation cloth is seen at the back. There are two principal varieties of these carpets, the Chenille Axminster and the Machine tufted Axminster. The Chenille type is made by two distinct operations, that of manufacturing the chenille weft and that of weaving the carpet with this weft. The " fur or chenille is first woven on an ordinary loom (see chenille) and when cut into the strips is used as weft with a linen, jute or folded cotton warp. The chenille is made preferably with the leno way of shedding in order to bind the wool yarn more firmly. All the figuring weft is on the surface and not embedded in the fabric. The chenille weft is often inserted by hand, but several mechanical methods for doing the work are now in use. From three to six tufts per inch are usual. The chenille Axminster Carpet is also known as the Patent Axminster carpet. The machine-tufted type or Royal Axminster is also formed from pile tufts previously prepared and afterwards woven in the ground warp and bound into the fabric with a binding weft. The tufts may be inserted by hand and the pile is all on the surface of the fabric. This pile is a warp product, whereas for the chenille variety it is weft. Axminster carpets are a product of skill and patience and any number of colours can be used. There are several varieties of machine-made axminster carpets. Wilton is a cut pile fabric woven 27-in. wide from not more than six colours, the yarns are fine counts and design produced by jacquards. Brussels is made almost in the same way as a Wilton, but the pile is not cut and this shows as loops on the face. The yarn is much coarser than for Wiltons. Kidderminster - A carpet made from two or more plain cloths woven together. Each cloth is brought on the face for figuring as required. Turkish - These are hand made. The pile is put into the ground warp by hand as tufts and knotted round them according to pattern. There are two picks of ground weft between each row of pile. Tapestry - Carpets woven from printed warps. The pile is cut or left uncut as required for the design. Persian - Carpets similar to Turkish, being hand made. See also Axminster, Brussels, Kidderminster, Persian Tapestry, Turkish, Wilton Carpets, Body Brussels, Brusselette, Ingrain. -
90 Hair Cloth
A heavy twilled cloth containing wool waste and some calf hair. A nap is raised by gigging. Used for carriage rugs. ———————— This fabric is woven from very strong three-fold cotton warp and horsehair weft. Other material, such as linen, has been used for the warp. Usually made with about 44 ends per inch, and 80 to 100 picks per inch. The weave is usually the 5-end satin. Horse hair is not dyed, and the hair used is generally black, and is cut from both the tails and manes. The lengths vary from 30-in. to 46-in., and a single hair forms one pick. A special loom is used, fitted with mechanism for picking up the hairs and drawing them one by one into the shed. The shuttle for doing this is equipped with a pair of nippers. There is a rough fringe of hair at each selvedge. The cloth is very stiff or wiry and is used for coat linings. Formerly the cloth was also used for upholstering chairs and couches, and some is used today for this purpose (see Cilicium). -
91 Menzies, Michael
[br]b. end of the seventeenth century Lanarkshire, Scotland (?)d. 13 December 1766 Edinburgh, Scotland[br]Scottish inventor and lawyer.[br]Menzies was admitted as a member of the Faculty of Advocates on 31 January 1719. It is evident from his applications for patents that he was more concerned with inventions than the law, however. He took out his first patent in 1734 for a threshing machine in which a number of flails were attached to a horizontal axis, which was moved rapidly forwards and backwards through half a revolution, essentially imitating the action of an ordinary flail. The grain to be threshed was placed on either side.Though not a practical success, Menzies's invention seems to have been the first for the mechanical threshing of grain. His idea of imitating non-mechanized action also influenced his invention of a coal cutter, for which he took out a patent in 1761 and which copied miners' tools for obtaining coal. He proposed to carry heavy chains down the pit so that they could be used to give motion to iron picks, saws or other chains with cutting implements. The chains could be set into motion by a steam-engine, by water-or windmills, or by horses gins. Although it is quite obvious that this apparatus could not work, Menzies was the first to have thought of mechanizing coal production in the style that was in use in the late twentieth century. Subsequent to Menzies's proposal, many inventors at varying intervals followed this direction until the problem was finally solved one century later by, among others, W.E. Garforth.Menzies had successfully used the power of a steam-engine on the Wear eight years beforehand, when he obtained a patent for raising coal. According to his device a descending bucket filled with water raised a basket of coals, while a steam-engine pumped the water back to the surface; the balance-tub system, in various forms, quickly spread to other coalfields. Menzies's patent from 1750 for improved methods of carrying the coals from the coalface to the pit-shaft had also been of considerable influence: this device employed self-acting inclined planes, whereon the descending loaded wagons hauled up the empty ones.[br]Further ReadingThe article entitled "Michael Menzies" in the Dictionary of National Biography neglects Menzies's inventions for mining. A comprehensive evaluation of his influence on coal cutting is given in the introductory chapter of S.F.Walker, 1902, Coal-Cutting byMachinery, London.WK -

A worsted fabric in twill hop-sack weave weighing 15-oz. or over for 58-in. The cloth is dyed indigo. Woven from 2/36's botany warp and 66's weft, and in fine reeds and picks, about 92 X 160. The finishing process shrinks the fabric about 20 per cent. The diagram shows the weave. Another cloth is woven with a silk warp and a fine botany weft in a weft rib weave. Used for dresses. This term was originally adopted as a registered trade name for an armure silk tie, but is now generally used for silk or worsted fabric with the pebbled weave of the armure. A fabric used for army clothing which had this name is made of all two-fold worsted yams and in a double twill weave -

Are coloured stripe or plain fabrics woven fromcotton warp and a wool mixture weft, plain weave, used for underclothing and shirts. This name was given to the fabric by Messrs. David and John Anderson, Glasgow, about 1858. The weft is from 60 to 80 per cent wool. A popular cloth is woven 68-ends, 60 picks 35's warp, and 22's worsted counts weft (cotton 20 per cent, worsted 80 per cent). So called Ceylons have been given this name, although having about 10 or 15 per cent of wool in their construction. These are not true Ceylons. -

Various names are given to the cloths according to the design. Such as Akwet, Bala, etc.; also see Lungi (1) ————————LOONGEES, LOONGHEES, LOONGYES, LOONGIES, LUNGIS, LONGYIThe shoulder or upper cloth worn by males in India. More strictly this is worn by Mohammedans and the Dhootie and Dhotee by Hindus. The cloth is of silk and cotton with gold thread embroidery at times. Made at Tatta, in Suidh, and other parts of India (see Lungi). The Indian cloth is generally 23-in. finished width and 41/2 yards long. The natives cut a length into two, and stitch the two pieces together side by side. The African style is 32-in. to 40-in. wide and of several lengths from 2 yard upwards. Made about 64 ends and 56 picks per inch, 32's T., 38's W., cotton. The borders have usually double the number of ends per inch, and in this cloth there will be 112 ends per inch in the border. All styles are checks, rather broad in design and of several colours, with a broad border at one selvedge. The border is all one colour and the yarns are crammed in the reed. The cloth is used for men's dress. The loongyes made for Mohammedan use are made from 29-in. to 44-in. wide and 2 yard to 91/2 yards long. Mercerised cotton, rayon and cotton and silk mixtures are used in the better qualities. The cheaper cloths are cut into two parts by the natives and stitched side by side. When borders are required they are made in colour. Loongyes are also used as a head-dress in the Punjab and other parts of India and native woven from fine yarns. A special " Chini " style is made from alternate blue and white yarn for Mohammedan use.
