(J. L. Martín). (M. F. de Arrate). Africanos de la costa atlántica, en un territorio ribereño entre Dakar y Sierra Leona, J. L. Martín cree que son los kankanda, sabe o sobo, llamados por el Dr. Ortiz gangá. Cree Martín que los "zape" o "gangá" son "un pueblo emparentado con los yorubas" o lucumís, y que poseen "lenguajes muy similares". De los "zape" escribió Arrate entre 1751-1760 refiriendo que existía desde 1598 una cofradía, a nombre de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios concedida a pedimento de los negros zape desde antes de 1598 en que el dilatorio trámite colonial terminó. También refiere la hermandad de San Benito de Palermo, que como la cofradía mencionada, era de libertos zape. Agrega J. L. Martín: "...casi pudiéramos afirmar que aquellos zapes cristianos, a quienes se refiere Arrate fueran los primeros yorubas establecidos en La Habana. Haciendo notar al mismo tiempo que después se les denominó, en conjunto, yorubas o yorumas, aunque en Africa había la distinción entre los del interior (yorubas propiamente dichos) y lucumís (yorubas costeños), por depender del rey Ulkumi". A las especulaciones de J. L. Martín se oponen los siguientes datos: que la tradición oral que yace en nuestros negros menciona a los "zapes" como una clase de africanos distintos de lucumís y congos; que no aparecen datos, orales o escritos, en Cuba, conocidos por nosotros o tratados por Ortiz, Castellanos o Lydia Cabrera, que mencionen e identifiquen a los tales "zapes" con los lucumís; que no se mencionan los apelativos de kankandas, sabe o sobo, en la tradición de Cuba; que la identidad entre zapes y "gangás" apareció por primera vez en la revista cubana Bohemia, del 12 de junio de 1949 (año 4 [m2]Nº 24) en un escrito del Sr. Juan Luis Martín, sin más demostración rigurosa. Escribió Ortiz en "Los Negros Esclavos". La Habana, 1916. "Zape.-Citado por Pérez Beato. En el mapa de Mungo Park figura Sappe como población de la ribera del Gambia y, seguramente, de ahí proceden". Más información aparece en la obra "Los Negros Esclavos", por el Dr. Fernando Ortiz y en el folk básico de Cuba, en fuentes vivas. -
