Por esta razón había que empezar muy temprano a alimentarlos con la hierba de los pajares, así sucedía que a lo mejor se presentaba una grande nevada en las postrimerías del invierno, y ya los pajares se encontraban sin nada o casi secos de toda vianda para el ganado, y las vacas muy principalmente mugían de hambre en las cuadras, entonces nosotros hocicando y peleando con bravura de mil formas diferentes por entre la nieve, íbamos a los montes en busca del xardón o la hierba que se enredaba en los grandes castaños o los poderosos robles, o las llastras de las montañas, y tratamos estas plantas que apaciguaban un poco el hambre de nuestras queridas vaquinas, que no permitían que se nos muriesen de hambre, ya que los otros animales, como las cabras, las ovejas o las caballerías, aguantan mejor el hambre que las vacas, o a lo mejor a nosotros nos lo parecía, y con menos comida se entretenían su necesidad. —Pero las vacas con estos xardones y hiedras aunque el hambre les apaciguara quedaban cadavéricas, y sus pelajes se tornaban negros o cenicientos, dependía del color de sus pellejos. Después de un invierno de éstos, ya era muy difícil que se recuperasen del todo, y ya no seguían dando la producción que antes solían. —Yo me recuerdo muy bien de un verano que llego con unos calores infernales, y como la primavera hubiese hecho lo mismo pues no pudimos recoger casi nada de hierba, y todo porque los campos no la habían alumbrado, así que los pajares quedaron a menos de la mitad de otros años, y para mal peor, se presentó el invierno más temprano, y venía lleno el condenado de unos helados fríos y abundantes nieves, quedándose los pajares antes de tiempo limpios de hierba y otras viandas para el ganado, como pueden ser los foyáus, el ñarbaxu, la paya, etc., y tuvimos que sostener el ganado a xardón y hiedra, y hasta las mismas hojas del maíz que teníamos en los jergones de dormir, les tuvimos que dar de comer. —Aquel endemoniado y triste invierno jamás se me borrara a mí del entendimiento todavía hoy cuando lo recuerdo, se me hace imposible que personas y animales lograramos sobrevivirlo.Primer Diccionario Enciclopédicu de la Llingua Asturiana > xardón
