101 Brodrick, Cuthbert
SUBJECT AREA: Architecture and building[br]b. 1822 Hull, Yorkshire, Englandd. 2 March 1905 Jersey, C.I.[br]English architect whose best-known buildings—Leeds Town Hall (1853–8) and the Grand Hotel in Scarborough (1863–7)—were of powerful baroque design.[br]Like a number of his contemporaries, Brodrick experimented with ferrovitreous construction, which by the second half of the nineteenth century was the favoured method of handling immense roofing spans of structures such as railway stations, shopping arcades and large exhibition and functional halls in England and America. The pattern for this had been set in 1851 with Sir Joseph Paxton's Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London.Brodrick's ferrovitreous venture was the Leeds Corn Exchange (1861–3). This is an oval building with its exterior severely rusticated in fifteenth-century Florentine-palace manner, but inside is a two-storeyed ring of offices, bounded by ironwork galleries surrounding a large, central area roofed by an iron and glass roof. This listed building was recently in poor condition but has now been rescued and restored for use as a shopping centre; however, the local traders still retain their right, according to the bye-laws, to trade there, and once a week a section of the hall is cleared so that corn trading can take place.[br]Further ReadingD.Lindstrom, 1967, Architecture of Cuthbert Brodrick, Country Life.—1978, West Yorkshire: Architects and Architecture, Lund Humphries.DY -
102 Dakin, Henry Drysdale
SUBJECT AREA: Medical technology[br]b. 12 March 1880 Hampstead, Englandd. 10 February 1952 Scarborough-on-Hudson, New York, USA[br]English biochemist, advocate and exponent of the treatment of wounds with antiseptic fluid, Dakin's solution (Eusol).[br]The youngest of a family of eight of moderate means, Dakin received his early education in Leeds experiencing strict scientific training as a public analyst. He regarded this as having been of the utmost value to him in his lifelong commitment to the emerging discipline of biochemistry. He was one of the earliest to specialize in the significance of optical activity in organic chemistry, and obtained his BSc from Manchester in 1901. Following this, he worked at the Lister (Jenner) Institute of Preventive Medicine and at Heidelberg. He then received an invitation to join Christian Herter in a private research laboratory that had been established in New York. There, for the rest of his life, he continued his studies into a wide variety of biochemical topics. Christian Herter died in 1910, and six years later his widow and Dakin were married.Unable to serve in the First World War, he made a major contribution, in collaboration with Carrel, with the technique for the antiseptic irrigation of wounds with a buffered hypochlorite solution (Eusol), a therapy which in the 1990s is still an accepted approach to the treatment of infected wounds. The original trials were carried out on the liner Aquitania, then serving as a hospital ship in the Dardanelles.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsFellow of the Royal Society 1917. 103 Fowler, John
SUBJECT AREA: Civil engineering[br]b. 11 July 1826 Melksham, Wiltshire, Englandd. 4 December 1864 Ackworth, Yorkshire, England[br]English engineer and inventor who developed a steam-powered system of mole land drainage, and a two-engined system of land cultivation, founding the Steam Plough Works in Leeds.[br]The son of a Quaker merchant, John Fowler entered the business of a county corn merchant on leaving school, but he found this dull and left as soon as he came of age, joining the Middlesbrough company of Gilkes, Wilson \& Hopkins, railway locomotive manufacturers. In 1849, at the age of 23, Fowler visited Ireland and was so distressed by the state of Irish agriculture that he determined to develop a system to deal with the drainage of land. He designed an implement which he patented in 1850 after a period of experimentation. It was able to lay wooden pipes to a depth of two feet, and was awarded the Silver Medal at the 1850 Royal Agriculture Show. By 1854, using a steam engine made by Clayton \& Shuttleworth, he had applied steam power to his invention and gained another award that year at the Royal Show. The following year he turned his attention to steam ploughing. He first developed a single-engined system that used a double windlass with which to haul a plough backwards and forwards across fields. In 1856 he patented his balance plough, and the following year he read a paper to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers at their Birmingham premises, describing the system. In 1858 he won the Royal Agricultural Society award with a plough built for him by Ransomes. Fowler founded the Steam Plough Works in Leeds and in 1862 production began in partnership with William Watson Hewitson. Within two years they were producing the first of a series of engines which were to make the name Fowler known worldwide. John Fowler saw little of his success because he died in 1864 at his Yorkshire home as a result of tetanus contracted after a riding accident.[br]Further ReadingM.Lane, 1980, The Story of the Steam Plough Works, Northgate Publishing (provides biographical details of John Fowler, but is mostly concerned with the company that he founded).AP -
104 Johnson, Samuel Waite
[br]b. 14 October 1831 Bramley, Leeds, Englandd. 14 January 1912 Nottingham, England[br]English locomotive engineer, designer of Midland Railway's successful compound locomotives.[br]After an apprenticeship with E.B.Wilson, Leeds, Johnson worked successively for the Great Northern, Manchester Sheffield \& Lincolnshire, Edinburgh \& Glasgow and Great Eastern Railways before being appointed Locomotive Superintendent of the Midland Railway in 1873. There he remained for the rest of his working life, becoming notable for well-designed, well-finished locomotives. Of these, the most famous were his 4–2–2 express locomotives, introduced in 1887. The use of a single pair of driving-wheels was made possible at this late date by application of steam sanding gear (invented in 1886 by F. Holt) to enable them to haul heavy trains without slipping. In 1901, almost at the end of his career, he produced the first Midland compound 4–4–0, with a single internal high-pressure cylinder and two external low-pressure ones. The system had been devised by W.M.Smith, working on the North Eastern Railway under Wilson Worsdell. These locomotives were successful enough to be developed and built in quantity by Johnson's successors and were adopted as a standard locomotive by the London Midland \& Scottish Railway after the grouping of 1923.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsPresident, Institution of Mechanical Engineers 1898.Further ReadingC.Hamilton Ellis, 1958, Twenty Locomotive Men, Ian Allan, Ch. 11 (describes Johnson's career).E.L.Ahrons, 1927, The British Steam Railway Locomotive 1825–1925, The Locomotive Publishing Co. 105 Joy, David
[br]b. 3 March 1825 Leeds, Englandd. 14 March 1903 Hampstead, London, England[br]English mechanical engineer, designer of the locomotive Jenny Lind and of Joy's valve gear for steam engines.[br]By the mid-1840s Joy was Chief Draughtsman at E.B.Wilson's locomotive works at Leeds. During that period, attempts by engineers to design ever larger and more powerful locomotives were producing ungainly types, such as the long-boiler and the Cramp ton, which were to prove blind alleys in locomotive development. Joy rediscovered the proper route with his Jenny Lind 2–2–2, built in 1847. His locomotive had minimal overhang, with the firebox between the driving and trailing axles; the driving axle supported inside frames which stopped short at the firebox, allowing the latter to be wide, while leading and trailing wheels were held by outside plate frames which had a degree of elasticity. The boiler was low-pitched, the steam pressure high at 120 psi (8.4 kg/cm2). The result was a powerful locomotive which rode well and immediately became popular, a forerunner of many later designs. Joy subsequently had a varied career with successive railways and engineering firms. In the late 1850s he invented steam reversing gear for large, marine steam engines, a hydraulic organ blower and a pneumatic hammer. In 1879 he invented his radial valve gear for steam engines, which was adopted by F.W. Webb for the London \& North Western Railway's locomotives and was also much used in marine steam engines.[br]Bibliography1879, British patent no. 929 (valve gear).Further ReadingObituary, 1903, Engineering (20 March).Obituary, 1903, The Engineer (20 March).PJGR -
