Существительное случай передается различными английскими словами в зависимости от значения. Случай ('происшествие') имеет несколько эквивалентов в английском языке: occurrence, event, incident, case, accident и emergency. Occurrence передает наиболее обобщенное значение – 'то, что случилось' и может взаимозаменяться с event и incident: happy occurrence, happy event, happy incident. Incident в повседневном употреблении имеет в виду событие второстепенного значения, часто случайное, не имеющее большого отношения к главным событиям; однако в газетной практике incident употребляется в значении 'решительное, критическое событие, могущее вызвать прекращение дипломатических отношений или явиться поводом к войне': border (frontier) incident 'случай на границе, пограничный инцидент'. Event обычно обозначает более или менее важное, значительное событие, не являющееся результатом случайности. В отличие от occurrence, употребляющегося только с препозитивным определением, event и incident могут сочетаться также с существительным (имеющим предлог of) в постпозиции: events of the season, ordinary incidents of daily life.
