Здесь же, напротив, несмотря на некоторую неуклюжесть постановки и скудость бюджета, поражает достоверность информации, предоставляемой фильмом, и относительная зрелость подачи материала и его использования в конструкции сценария. Оставаясь прежде всего приключенческой картиной, фильм, тем не менее, опирается на довольно разнообразный костяк персонажей, и каждый по-своему относится к фашизму. Алан Лэдд (в одной из второстепенных ролей) играет слабохарактерного молодого человека, которому понадобится немало времени для понимания необходимости подпольной борьбы, настолько он убежден, что тираны всегда губят себя сами. Он не выносит заточения в лагере и погибает при попытке к бегству. Главный герой (Роуленд Дрю) разрывается между обязанностями личной жизни (его жена вот-вот родит) и борьбой. Воинский долг в нем побеждает. В лагере он встречает старого знакомого, который стал комендантом. Также герой Роуленда Дрю знакомится с надзирателем, весьма подкованным в диалектике, который пытается его убедить, что стадия насилия - лишь неприятный этап на пути к окончательной победе нацизма.N.B. Первоначально фильм назывался Гусиным шагом (Goose Step), затем, когда в Европе разгорелась война, он получил новое название для широкого проката в октябре 1939 г.: Гитлер - берлинское чудовище - это шокирующее название было позаимствовано у фильма Руперта Джулиана Кайзер, берлинское чудовище (The Kaiser, the Beast of Berlin, 1918).
