* * *nascere1/'na∫∫ere/ [63]La traduzione in inglese di nascere crea due tipi di problemi: innanzitutto, il verbo nascere è reso dalla forma passiva di to bear (= partorire, generare), cosicché to be born traduce nascere in quanto significa essere partorito / generato; ciò spiega l'imperfetta corrispondenza formale nelle due lingue in frasi come sono nato / nacqui nel 1956 = I was born in 1956 o era nato in una famiglia povera = he had been born in a poor family; secondariamente, quando nascere è usato in senso letterale ma non in riferimento agli esseri umani oppure in senso figurato, l'inglese utilizza solitamente altri verbi, per i quali vedi sotto le accezioni 2 e seguenti.(aus. essere)1 (venire al mondo) [persona, animale] to be* born; è nata il 5 maggio '99 she was born on 5 May 1999; quando deve nascere il bambino? when is your baby due? è appena nato he is a newborn baby; vedere nascere qcn. to see sb. being born; l'ho visto nascere fig. 15 -to make-
Nota d'usoNella costruzione causativa il verbo all'infinito che segue to make non è preceduto da to: si dice That made me think, ciò mi fece riflettere e non That made me to think; The medicine made me feel better, la medicina mi fece sentire meglio; They made him resign, lo costrinsero a dimettersi, lo fecero dimettere. Nella corrispondente forma passiva l'infinito deve invece essere preceduto da to: She must be made to come back, bisogna farla tornare, la si deve far tornare; I was made to wait for hours, mi fecero aspettare per ore. -
16 -to remain o to be?-
Nota d'usoIl verbo “rimanere” si può tradurre in molti contesti con to remain. Tuttavia, quando è seguito da un participio passato di un altro verbo, come ad es. “rimanere ferito”, in inglese si usa semplicemente la forma passiva del verbo in questione, to be injured: Many people were injured in the explosion, molte persone sono rimaste ferite nell'esplosione; I hope they were satisfied with the trip, spero che siano rimasti soddisfatti del viaggio. In contesti informali, a volte si può usare anche il verbo to get: They got killed in the accident, sono rimasti uccisi nell'incidente. -
