97 Corduroy
A term that is commonly known as 2 & 2 rib, or two ribs alternating on face and back of children's stockings. ———————— A strong cotton cloth used for suitings. It is cut pile fabric, and has hard-wearing qualities. The weave has a cord or rib surface with either round or flat tops, with pile formed by the weft. When woven with a twill back it is known as a " Genoa back," and when a plain back is used it is termed " tabby back " corduroy. Fabrics of this class are woven in the same way as velvets, except that the pile picks are bound by the warp so as to form straight lines of floats; thus producing a ribbed surface. After weaving, the material undergoes (before cutting) the same stiffening and liming process as velvets. Corduroys are made in many varieties, known as fine reed, eight shafts, thicksets, constitutions, cables, etc. (see Constitutionals). The illustration shows a corduroy design, wherein crosses show ground weaves and filled squares the pile picks. An illustration is given of the cloth with the pile cut. The ribs may vary from 12 to 1 per inch ▪ -
98 Down
The purified new undercoating of waterfowl (duck, goose or swan) consisting of the light, fluffy filaments but without any quill shaft. Owing to the natural difficulties of complete separation, a manufacturer's tolerance of not more than 25 per cent by weight of small, light, fluffy feathers is allowed. Note. - It is permissible to use the term " down quilt " as a generic description for the type of quilt which is known by that name, since this usage is well understood by the public. Where, however, any individual quilt described under this general heading is not filled with down, as defined, the description of such quilt must be qualified by the name of the actual material content. Natural Feathers: - (a) Poultry Feathers - The purified new feather plumage of fowls, other than water fowl. (b) Duck Feathers - The purified new feather plumage of ducks. (c) Goose Feathers - Any of the purified new feather plumage of geese. Milled Feathers - Any of the purified new feathers as described above which have been crushed, chopped, stripped or ground. (R.T.S.A. Standard) -
99 Flax Retting
Ret, Aerated - A type of ret where compressed air is forced into the bottom of the tank to maintain the retting liquor at or near the neutral point as regards acidity. Ret, Aerobic - A type of bacterial ret where the predominant bacteria are aerobic, i.e., work only in the presence of oxygen. Ret, Anaerobic - Any type of bacterial retting where the predominant bacteria are anaerobic, i.e., work in the absence of oxygen. This is the usual condition. Ret, Belgian - A term applied to a tank ret where warm water is sprayed into the bottom of the tank at intervals. Ret, Channel - A ret in which crates of flax are regularly introduced at one end of a water channel and removed at the other end. Ret, Chemical - The straw is subjected to chemical solutions to induce loosening of the fibre from the wood. Ret, Dam - Water retting by immersing the crop or de-seeded straw in dams cut in the earth and filled with water at natural temperature. Ret, Dew - The straw is spread on the ground in the open, in a thin layer and retting is effected by the action of fungi in the presence of rain, dew and sunlight. Ret, Double - The straw is subjected to two independent rets with intermediate drying. Ret, Duplex - A form of tank retting in which one tankful of straw undergoing the second half of its ret is in circulation with another tankful undergoing the first half of its ret. Ret, Interrupted - Essentially a two-stage warm water tank ret, the retting liquor being replaced by fresh water when the ret is about one-half to two-thirds complete. Ret, Pond - Water retting by immersing the crop or de-seeded straw in natural ponds. Ret, River - The straw is immersed in rivers, but usually after being packed in crates. Ret, Rossi - A type of aerated or aerobic retting in which a pure culture of bacteria is introduced. Ret, Tank- - The straw is packed into concrete or other tanks and the temperature of the water and its renewal during the ret is controlled. Ret, Water - The total immersion of the straw in water to induce retting by bacterial action. Retting - The subjection of crop or deseeded straw to chemical or biological treatment to make the fibre strands more easily separable from the woody part of the stem. -
100 Karchobi
A very rich gold or silver embroidery in Payale and Surat, India, used principally on large costly articles, such as cushions of state, elephant trappings, etc. The silk velvet or cloth used as foundation is stretched tight on a wooden frame. The design is first filled in or padded, with long stitches of yellow silk to make the gold embroidery stand out. Over this the gold or silver thread is couched down. Where the entire surface is to be covered with metal thread the ground is worked with herringbone effect. Variety is obtained by changing the direction of the metal thread and by employing higher relief on some parts than on the others. The principal subdivisions are: - (1) Kasabtiki, executed with gold or silver thread and spangles, done especially in Surat. (2) Jhikchalak, executed -with two-fold heavy gold or silver thread, each ply of which shows a corkscrew-like effect. (3) Charat-Karachi, so-called because it imitates the Karachi work by using cardboard for winding to give raised effect to the design. (4) Jhiktiki, is a combination of the thread in No. 2 with gold or silver spangles. (5) Chalak-Tiki, similar to No. 4. This embroidery is done on the frame. When done in hand stitches it is known as Reshami Bharat Kam.
