En la Universidad del Sur de California consigue culminar los estudios de Arte Dramatico y empieza su andadura teatral en Los Angeles. En 1949 es contratado por la cadena de television KLAC, donde recorrio toda la escala social de trabajos, que desembocaron en un contrato con la Allied Artists de Walter Wanger. El medio cinematografico en el que ahora se desarrolla su actividad le proporciona a Peckinpah, entre otras cosas, algunos amigos influyentes como el actor Joel McCrea o el director Charles Marquis Warren. Este le proporciona la oportunidad de escribir para la serie de television Gunsmoke; aquel sera uno de los dos protagonistas de su segunda pelicula, Duelo en la alta sierra. Llega a dirigir episodios televisivos antes de que la Fox le permita rodar su primer largometraje, que es un fracaso de publico y critica. No obstante, sus exitos televisivos le permiten obtener un contrato de Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer para rodar su segunda pelicula.
