Энергичность, пылкость, язвительность авторской речи и актерской игры нисколько не угасли. Конечно, фильм далеко не безупречен. Начальные сцены - лучшие в фильме (знакомство с бродягой в тюрьме; воздействие независимого весельчака на провинциальную публику, которая не слышала раньше ничего подобного), однако потом приходится сожалеть, что превращение дерзкого маргинала в безудержного и продажного демагога происходит слишком быстро и неестественно. В автобиографии Капра упрекает Лэнгдона, что он так до конца и не понял образ своего персонажа. Этот фильм показывает, что Лэнгдон понимал этот образ прекрасно. В фильмах, поставленных Капрой, юмор часто рождался из контраста и противопоставления 2 точек зрения: неполной, иррациональной точки зрения Лэнгдона и более информированной, рациональной точки зрения зрителя. В Силаче, The Strong Man зритель знает, что авантюристка позарилась на деньги Лэнгдона. Сам же Лэнгдон думает, что она увлеклась им как личностью, и ничего не понимает. В Длинных штанах, Long Pants публика знает, что полицейский, стоящий у ящика, – всего лишь манекен. Лэнгдон не знает об этом и ведет себя так, будто это живой человек.
