Decía yo que en mi aldea los gitanos más días se aposentaban, porque estaban todo el tiempo trabajando en el hacer cestas de todos los tamaños, unos iban a cortar las mimbres, otros las mondaban y otros tejían los cestos, y cuando ya no quedaban más mimbres en todas las orillas del pequeño río, entonces se marchaban de mi aldea cargados como avejones de cestas y de manojos de mimbres, pues éstas cuando más viejas se hacen luego metiéndolas en remojo, mejor se trabajan y más tiempo duran los cestos que con ellas se fabriquen. Un día que estaba yo al lado de la casa del cestero con otros niños jugando, llegaron unos gitanos a todas las casas de la aldea en su trabajo de cambiar las cestas venían visitando, así se encontraron en la casa del cestero, que ya hacía tiempo que no industriaba ningún cesto, y estaba endiablado de mala leche por no tener nada de trabajo, sucedió que cuando los gitanos le dijeron que si les daba alguna cosa por aquellos cestos, enfadado el cestero así les dijo: —Lo que os daría yo de muy buena gana por encima del lomo sería una grande cesta de estacazos, para que aprendieseis a no regalar vuestro trabajo por un plato de judías, ¡condenados gitanos del coño de la abuela que os acunó! ¡Marcharos pronto de mi lado si no queréis que os plante la hoz en el cuello! Los gitanos más listos que el cestero, se fueron de su lado sin contestarle palabra, dejándole enojado con su rabia. El caso era que ningún cestero se llevaba bien con sus competidores los gitanos, porque éstos al hacer sus cestas más ligeras, sencillas, curiosas y casi regaladas, a los cesteros les robaban su trabajo, dejándoles poco más que las grandes cestas que duraban muchísimos años.
