Этими св-вами обладают минералы двух групп — серпентина и амфибола, известные под названием хризотин-асбеста и амфибол-асбеста, различ. по атомной структуре. По хим. составу асбестовые минералы - водные силикаты Mg, Fe и отчасти Са и Na. Наиб. значение имеет хризотил-асбест Mg6[Si4OJ(OH), (~95 % всего используемого а.). Волокна а. гибки, высокопрочны при растяжении (-3000 МПа), огнестойки (tm=1500 °С), плохо проводят тепло и электричество. А. классифицируют в завис-ти от длины волокна. Выпускается > 3000 материалов и изделий с примененем асбеста (асбестотехнич., асбестоцемент. изоляц. материалы и изделия), к-рые широко применяются в пром. строительстве, металлургии и др. отраслях.
